Jammu, April 14
In a significant development, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee today asked Congress-backed Ram Jethmalani to reconsider his decision to contest against him in Lucknow in the Lok Sabha elections, which he said might be the last election for both as “active participants”.

Extending the olive branch to him, Mr Vajpayee disapproved of the attacks made by his party colleagues against Mr Jethmalani, who has filed his nominations from Lucknow.

In a statement, Mr Vajpayee said he and Mr Jethmalani had been friends and colleagues for 40 years now and had broadly shared political values and goals and were together in the fight for democracy.

“Ram has filed his nominations to contest the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections from the Lucknow constituency, from where I am also seeking re-election. Since this is likely to be the last elections in which we will be active participants, I expect that he will reconsider his decision,” he said.

The Prime Minister said the issues that were of concern to him (Jethmalani) — particularly security and welfare of the minorities and the freedom of the Press — had always been important to “me as well.”

“I assure him that these will continue to be addressed, if I am returned to office, after the elections,” Mr Vajpayee said.

Asserting that he was witness to Mr Jethmalani’s many contributions and continuing commitment to the country’s political and social causes, including Jammu and Kashmir and Indo-Pak relations, Mr Vajpayee said his advice and counsel in these matters would always be valued. — PTI

A day of rallies in Bandipore
Tribune News Service

Bandipore (Baramula), April 14
With only four days left for campaigning for the first phase of elections, political leaders are engaged in campaigns for their candidates in the Baramula constituency which goes to the polls on April 20.

It was a day of rallies in Bandipore where the Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, and former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah held public meetings in support of the candidates of the PDP and the National Conference, respectively.

The Congress candidate, Mr Ghulam Rasool Kar, addressed a meeting in this township, apart from wayside public meetings at various places between his hometown Sopore and Bandipore.

“It has been a hectic day for us”, said a police officer, engaged in providing security to the leaders visiting the area. “We have to be more cautions in view of the recent attacks on the PDP rally in Uri”, he added.

Those who converged on this town included the Chief Minister, senior PDP colleagues and ministers Muzaffar Hussain Beigh, Ghulam Hassan Mir and PDP candidate, Nizamuddin Bhat, most of whom are under Z plus security category.

Another top leader falling in the Z plus category, Dr Farooq Abdullah, arrived here. He was accompanied by his party leaders and party candidate, Mr Abdul Rasheed Shaheen.

The Chief Minister said: “Bullet is no answer to the situation” and only the ballot would resolve issues.

Dr Abdullah lashed out at the Mufti government and its policies. He said the Mufti and his daughter had no role in the initiation of peace talks between India and Pakistan, adding that these talks were the result of the efforts by the USA.

Panthers Party to field 5 candidates
Our Correspondent

Jammu, April 14
Efforts by the Congress and the PDP to persuade the Panthers Party Chief, Prof Bhim Singh to opt out of the contest for the Udhampur Lok Sabha seat have failed following an announcement by Mr Bhim Singh that he would file his nomination papers on April 17. The PDP and the Congress were trying to motivate Mr Bhim Singh for avoiding a split in the pro-ruling coalition voters by fielding himself from Udhampur constituency.

Mr Bhim Singh initially pleaded with the PDP and the Congress leadership that the Udhampur seat be left for the Panthers Party. In this connection he had met AICC President, Ms Sonia Gandhi, but the state Congress leaders, especially PCC President, Ghulam Nabi Azad, and Deputy Chief Minister, Mangat Ram Sharma, opposed any bargain with the Panthers Party Chairman. Prof Bhim Singh has decided to field party candidates from five constituencies, including Jammu which is a key seat for the Congress.

Indications are that Prof Bhim Singh may be thrown out of the coalition. There are four MLAs belonging to the Panthers Party and two of them are in the Council of Ministers headed by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed.

Minister accused of poll code violation

Jammu, April 14
The Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party today urged the Election Commission (EC) to take note of the alleged violation of the model code of conduct by the state’s Health Department and Service Selection Board in releasing the list of drivers recruited in the department.

The selection list of 20 candidates for the posts of driver in Kathua appeared in newspapers recently and was signed by the Secretary of the board, the JKNPP state chief, Mr Mushtaq Ahmed Khan, said, adding that this amounts to “total violation of election manual”.

“This is an open benefit to the appointees and their family members to seek vote for the Congress in the Udhampur constituency,” he said, accusing Health Minister Lal Singh of committing “several other” code violations. He appealed to the people to maintain unity in Jammu and Kashmir and safeguard the composite culture of the state by participating in the elections. — PTI

Muslims urged to vote NDA out of power

Srinagar, April 14
A prominent religious leader, Maulana Athar Hussain Dehalvi, today asked the Muslims to vote the BJP-led NDA out of power, alleging that the community had gone through the “worst phase” in its history in the country during its five-year rule.

“This year’s General Election will decide the future of secularism, communal harmony and the Muslim community in the country. Muslims all over the country, including Jammu and Kashmir, should ensure that the BJP and its allies at the Centre are defeated,” Maulana Dehalvi, who heads the Delhi-based Anjuman Minhaj-e-Rasool, told reporters here. He condemned the National Conference (NC) for staying in power at the Centre with the BJP for four years, though the two parties were “diametrically opposed” on Article 370.

He also criticised the NC’s role during the Gujarat riots and held it responsible for the creation of the Special Task Force of the state police, which had been accused of “gross violation” of human rights. — PTI
