Baig asks for lifting of security cover

Srinagar, April 10
Jammu and Kashmir Finance Minister Muzaffar Hussain Baig, who was among the injured in the Uri grenade blast two days ago, today asked the authorities to lift his security cover, apparently in protest against the downgrading of his security.

“I request that the security cover provided to me should be lifted so that I can move around like an ordinary citizen,” Mr Baig said in a communication to the Chief Secretary.

“In that event the potential militant may feel some qualms of conscience before targeting me,” the Minister said in the communication, copies of which were sent to the state Director-General of Police and the Financial Commissioner (Home).

Mr Baig said his security was upgraded to the ‘Z plus’ category last year after his name figured on the “hit list” of militants but “ironically , thereafter I was provided the security given to a legislator”.

JKVM rejects poll boycott call

Jammu, April 10
Rejecting the call to boycott poll in the state, the Jammu and Kashmir Vichar Manch (JKVM) today demanded “political space” for Kashmiri Pandits in the state.

“We have outrightly rejected the boycott call. As the boycott of the Lok Sabha election has proved to be the most inept instrument to press our demands,” JKVM political adviser R.L. Bhat told reporters here.

“Although we firmly believe that elections have become irrelevant to problems of the exiled people, boycotting them only aggravate the denial of political space for Pandits,” Dr Bhat said.

Meanwhile, he expressed concern over the “callous attitude” of the J and K Government towards the problems of Kashmiri Pandits and pointed out that the apprehensions and doubts raised by the JKVM at the installation of the Mufti government have proved right as it has closed all doors for economic, social and other opportunities for the community.

Dr Bhat alleged that the linking the employment to their return to the valley was a deep-rooted conspiracy to prevent the rehabilitation of Pandits. — PTI

CPI to support NC, CPM candidates

Jammu, April 10
The Jammu and Kashmir unit of the CPI today said it would not contest the parliamentary elections but support the Opposition National Conference (NC) candidates in five seats and the CPM nominee in Anantnag to defeat the BJP.

“Our party has decided to support a party with a secular outlook and broad-based existence with the object of defeating the BJP and as such the party will support the National Conference, which is the only secular force in this part of the country”, CPI state unit secretary Kanwal Dev told reporters here.

The CPI would also support the CPM candidate in Anantnag if it put up a candidate against PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, he said.

Mr Kanwal Dev said earlier the CPI had serious reservations on supporting the National Conference, which had allied with the BJP-led NDA, but the party’s recent declaration to work for the betterment of the masses, fight communal forces and struggle for the overall development of the state indicated that it was going forward to realise the goal for which it came into being. — PTI

Kabuli withdraws from Srinagar contest

Srinagar, April 10
The President of the Jammu and Kashmir National Democratic Front (JKNDF) and candidate from the Srinagar parliamentary constituency, Mr Abdul Rashid Kabuli, today withdrew from the contest citing “confusion” and “feeling of insecurity” among voters in the state.

With Mr Kabuli’s withdrawal, 13 candidates, including two women, remain in the fray in the prestigious constituency.

Giving reasons for his withdrawal, Mr Kabuli said the tragic incident at Uri had proved that a government which could not protect its ministers and workers could not be expected to provide protection to the Opposition.
