Red Cross to set up home for AIDS patients
Ajay Banerjee
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, March 27
Showing sensitivity towards AIDS patients, the local unit of the Red Cross Society proposes to set up a centre for people suffering from the disease or infected by HIV.
In a pioneering effort to help AIDS patients, the Red Cross Society had sent a proposal to the State AIDS Prevention and Control Society. The proposal has been accepted and the groundwork has started. A dispensary in Sector 29 has been identified to be handed over to Red Cross. Initially the place will be equipped to handle 10 to 12 persons.

The idea is to provide on the premises all facilities needed for such patients. This will be run on the lines of the Hospice, where terminally ill cancer patients are kept. It serves as a home for them as they need specialised care, which is not possible at home and hospital beds cannot be blocked for months. Also, prolonged occupation of hospital beds causes financial strain to on the family.

The success of the hospice spurred Red Cross into setting up this community care project.

The biggest challenge is to get well-trained staff. Handling AIDS patients is a highly specialised job, said the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Arun Kumar, who is also part of Red Cross.

Since Red Cross may not be equipped to handle the project, the Internal Medicine Department of the PGI and the State AIDS Control Society will be actively involved in the project.

The State AIDS Control Society has also sanctioned a grant of Rs 20 lakh. Red Cross will contribute 20 per cent of the cost. The National AIDS Control Organisation lays down guidelines for handling AIDS patients and these will have to be followed.

According to sources, once the Sector 29 dispensary is handed over to Red Cross, it will need re-designing for the project.
