Man gets 7-yr RI for dowry death

New Delhi, March 20
A city court has sentenced a person for seven years imprisonment for harassing his wife for dowry, who committed suicide in January 2001.

The court has also fined him of Rs 5,000 in addition u/s 304-A. The accused, Ajay Spehia, was working with armed forces and was posted in Kashmir during Kargil war. On the intervening night of 6/7 January 2001, he had altercation with his wife Asha after which she committed suicide by hanging her with the ceiling fan.

Next day, the parents of Asha lodged a complaint. During SDM inquiry, it was learnt that Asha was not happy after marriage and Ajay used to harass her for dowry.

Ajay got married to Asha on May 7, 1998. Since then he was not satisfied and used to demand more dowry. The order said that Ajay was demanding dowry from her parents and they even paid Rs 40,000 to him after marriage. But still he was not satisfied. After some time, he again started demanding a scooter, which they refused to give him. On the fateful night, the duo had an altercation at around 2 am that reportedly lasted for one hour. TNS
