Responsibility of business stressed

Ludhiana, March 20
Many industrialists, professionals and academicians participated in a seminar on “Social responsibility of business” organised by Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology (GNIMT), Model Town, here today.

Three technical sessions were held in which participants contributed papers on related topics. Dr M.A. Zahir, former Dean, College of Basic Sciences and Humanities, Punjab Agricultural University, was the chief guest. Mr D.L. Sharma, President and Executive Director, Mahavir Spinning Mills, was the guest of honour. Mr V.K. Goyal, Chief Executive, Vardhman Spinning Mills, was the keynote speaker.

In the inaugural session, Dr Zahir said that the significance of embracing social responsibility cannot be undermined in the present context. In the growing age of global competitiveness, it was in the self interest of the companies to renew their focus on philanthropic efforts, he said. Mr Sharma said that business should act as a partner in the progress of society. Mr Goyal spoke on the topic ‘Business of business is not only business’. He said that business was an off-spring of the society and should therefore return something to the society in lieu of the benefits it received.

Dr K. Chandra Sekharaiah, Professor from Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Jawaharlal Technological University, Hyderabad, chaired the first technical session. He also presented a paper on ‘Understanding social responsibility of modern information systems managers’ Dr Mahabir Narwal and Dr Tejinder Sharma from Kurukshetra University presented a paper on ‘Social responsibility of business: A study of multinationals’ behaviour’.

Dr A.S. Bansal, Director of the institute, also spoke The seminar was organised under the aegis of Indian Society of Technical Education (ISTE).

Convocation at CMCH

Ludhiana, March 20
The annual convocation and prize distribution function of Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) and College of Nursing was held here today. Rev. Dr Thomas Kalam, Director St John’s National Academy of Health Sciences, Bangalore, was the chief guest.

The Principal CMC, Dr Mohan Verghese, conferred degrees on 38 medical and 63 nursing graduates. In his convocation address, Dr Kalam spoke about the contribution of the CMCH in providing medical services in and around, Punjab.

Thereafter, reports pertaining to medical and nursing colleges and student’s activities were presented by Dr Mohan Verghese, Ms Pennamma Ranadive and Dr Rajesh Calton, respectively.

A total of 50 merit awards/medals were also given for special achievements in various fields. Viju Abraham received gold for the best student and seven other prizes. Manmeet Singh Jhawar bagged eight prizes and Ms Harkamal Kaur won six prizes. Dr Rashmi Kaur of the medicine department bagged the best PG student award. The Lifetime Service Award for this year was presented to Dr B.C.Roy and his wife Dr Ms Bimla Roy, for their commitment and quality medical services through the mission hospitals. They are presently serving at Christian Hospital, Jhansi.

Renu Abraham for all round best nursing student and best community health nurse and Ms Susan John for best bedside nurse. Dr Tejinder Singh presented a vote of thanks.

From Colleges
585 students receive degrees

Ludhiana, March 20
As many as 585 graduates and post-graduates were awarded degrees at the convocation of the Government College for Women here today. The degrees were conferred upon the students by Ms Nisa Sharad, DPI, Colleges.

The highest number of graduates were from the arts stream, followed by science and commerce. Forty-seven post-graduate degrees were given.

The following students were received the roll of honour:

Academics: Sakshi Arora, Baljinder Kaur, Shikha Gandhi, Deepti Gandhi, Namita Sekhri, Kanchandeep Kaur, Nitika, Charanjit, Harpreet and Harnam Kaur.

Social and cultural activities: Monika Sharma, Varinder Kaur, Preety Devgan, Manisha Jin and Vanika Jain.

Sports: Paramjeet Kaur, Gaganpreet, Sarbjot Kaur, Vijeyta Bedi, and Kanwaldeep.

College colours were presented to Jaskanwal Kaur Sohi, Neha Saini, Amandeep Kaur, Prabhjot Kaur, Nimrata, Charanpreet, Sonia Ahuja, Jasmeet Kaur and Aarti Sharma. In NCC, Deepti Dhiman, Gagandeep Mann and Sukhwinder Kaur received the college colours.

In Sports, college colours for kho-kho were presented to Sarabjot Kaur, Sukhwinder, Seema Rani, Mona Rani, Kiranjot Kaur, Rajwant Kaur, Neetu Chopra, Jasvir Kaur, Amandeep Kaur and Sandeep Kaur while the colours for gymnastics were presented to Sunita Rani, Shaveta Arora and Manpreet Kaur.

Paramjit Kaur received the colours for athletics and Sarabjot Kaur, Sandeep Cheema, Sandeep Dhindsa, Pawandeep Kaur, Kulwinder Kaur, Jyoti and Avtar Kaur for hockey. The colours for swimming went to Priyanka, Harnam, Sonia Seth and Ekta Markin.

The following were awarded the certificate of merit for 2001-2002:

Academics: Shikha Panwal, Jasdeep Kaur, Kanchandeep Kaur, Nidhi, Gurpreet Kaur, Suneet Kaur, Rachna Mittal, Nitika, Anjali Gupta, Najna Bajaj.

NCC: Sita Rani, Kulwinder Kaur, Hema, Rajinder Kaur, Vaishali Renu Bala, Rupinder Kaur, Aarti Jaswal, Harpreet Kaur, Behardeep Kaur, and Ravinder Kaur.

Mrs S.K.P. Singh Memorial Award and Mrs Santosh Bhardwaj Memorial Award were won by Jyoti Bala and Rajpreet, respectively.

The Principal, Ms Kusum Ahuja, highlighted the achievements of the students and staff members.

M.Com II students get farewell: The M.Com II students of the Department of Commerce, Arya College, were given farewell party here today.

Ms Shweta Chugh of M.Com I welcomed the senior students and the guests. Mr H.R. Saini, Head of the Department of Commerce, wished good luck to the M.Com II students.

Dr S.M. Sharma, Principal of the college, congratulated the students of M. Com I for the wonderful show they had put up and also honoured various prize winners. The Principal wished good luck to the outgoing class. Vinnie Kakkar of M.Com II was declared the “All-round best student” of the school.

Mai Bhago College: The BA II students of Mai Bhago College for Women, Ramgarh village, organised a cultural programme to bid farewell to their seniors yesterday.

The function was presided by Ms Bhinder Kaur Garcha while Mr Tejinder Kaur was the chief guest. The president of the Management Committee of the college, Mr Mahinder Singh Mangat, and the Principal of the college, Dr Kirpal Kaur Randhawa, wished the outgoing students success in their life.

Mandeep Kaur of BA III was adjudged “Miss Farewell” and awarded a cash prize of Rs 10,000.

Grandparents’ Day celebrated

Ludhiana, March 21
The students and staff of Ryan International School, Urban Estate, here, celebrated Grandparents’ Day today.
Story-telling sessions, Punjabi folk dances, traditional and classical dances, skits and speeches, formed part of the celebrations.

A cultural programme was organised by the montessori and primary section students. The students and their grandparents took part in various games.

The following grandparents were declared winners: Mr O.P. Malhotra stood first, Mr Dharam Pal, second, and Ms Balwinder Kaur, third, Ms Prem Nanda, consolation prize.

The Headmistress, Ms Anupama Sapra, said it was through such interactions that family bonding was nurtured which gave a healthy atmosphere to the child for his growth and development.

Farewell party: Sky Way Pre-Nursery School, Club Road, organised a farewell party for tiny tots of its outgoing batch here.

Little children came in colourful dresses. They were served cold drinks, sweets and snacks. A dance party was organised. A group photograph of the outgoing batch was taken.

The school Principal, Ms Asha Chikersal, wished the students luck.

Annual function: Love Dale Montessori School celebrated annual function at the Le Baron hotel here on Saturday. Around 100 children participated in different items, including patriotic song, choreography, and dance. All children were given refreshment and prizes.

Deepak Manmohan Singh honoured

Ludhiana , March 20
A programme to felicitate Prof Deepak Manmohan Singh, who retired as Chairman, Sheikh Baba Farid Chair of Indian Literature, Panjab University, Chandigarh, was organised at Gurusar Sudhar near here today. Students, friends, well-wishers and eminent personalities of the area gathered to honour Dr Singh for his services in the fields of art, literature, culture and administration.

Dr Singh remained fellow of PU Senate throughout his career and worked as Dean , College Development Council. He shared memories of his student days with the audience.

Dr Harbhajan Singh Deol, ex-chairman Linguistic Minorities Commission, Government of India was the chief guest.

Other distinguished personalities honoured during the function were Mrs Satinder Dhillon, Principal Dev Samaj College of Education, Chandigarh and fellow PU Senate.

Miss Govinder Kaur Sidhu , Principal SDS college of education Lopon and member PU Syndicate.

Dr Hardiljit Gosal, Head PG department, Khalsa College Garhdiwala and member university Syndicate.

Dr Jagdish Kaur Bains, Dr Kuldeep Kaur Pannu, Dr S S Sangha, fellows were present.

Principal Dr Ravinder Kaur, Principal Dr Chander Mohini were also present at the function.

Lecture on event management

A lecture on ‘Event management’ was organised at Gujranwala Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology (GGNIMT) here today.
Mr Aditya Raj Kalia, Managing Director of Catalysts, an event managing company, spoke on various essential aspects of event management. He said that every arrangement for an event had to be made meticulously depending on the budget, gathering and space available.

The lecture was very interactive with students asking questions on career opportunities available in the field. It was followed by a pre-placement talk and three tier recruitment process. The students were asked to deliver a micro-presentation, participate in group discussion followed by a personal interview.
