Ludhiana, March 17
It was a day of annual reunion for a dozen-odd students of 1951 batch of Punjab Agricultural University at the Parker House this morning.
Of the 12 members who were present at the meeting, three had come from overseas. Prof Beant S. Ahloowalia a technology consultant from Vienna. He retired as a scientist from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Prior to this, he was with the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO), Rome.

Prof Ahloowalia said that this was the third get together of his batch. He said that it was started three years ago.

Dr Premi, retired soil scientists from the British Grassland Research Institute, Hurley, UK, USA, Dr Mangat, former Chief Agricultural Officer, Albertina, Canada, were also here.

Some of the local members who had come for the event included Dr D.S. Dev, who retired Dean of College of Agriculture, PAU, Mr Nirbhey Singh, a fish farmer from Phillaur and sarpanch of his village, and Mr Hari Kumar, an agro-chemical manufacturer, were also present.

Juniors bid adieu to final-year students

Ludhiana, March 17
MA Departments of Guru Nanak Girls College, Model Town, here hosted a farewell function. The highlight was a modeling contest for MA final-year students.
Amandeep was declared Miss Farewell, while Sumandeep and Simarjot were the first and second runners-up. Gurpreet won the title of best-dressed student.

Students of BCom II also hosted a function to bid adieu to the final-year students. The winners of their Miss Farewell contest were Harpreet, Miss Farewell, Samriti, first runner-up, and Shika, second runner-up. Charanjit was Miss Beautiful Smile and Rajni Miss Best Dressed.

In Master Tara Singh College, too, students of MA Hindi and Punjabi, BA, B.Com, and PGDCA arranged a farewell function for their seniors. Dance items were presented by students. Miss Farewell was Deep Shikha, while Shivani was declared Miss Charming. Komal and Shewta were the first and second runners-up.

Ms Sahota, Principal, said that from the next session courses in mathematics and fine arts would start.

The students of SDP College BA/BCom final year were given a warm send-off by their juniors on the college premises. Students presented dance and song items as well as skits and mono acting. Fun games were also organised. There were contests for Miss Farewell, Miss Catwalk, Miss Smile, Miss Beautiful Hairstyle, Miss Graceful and Miss Beautiful Jewellery.

Inter-college fest: Aaftab, an inter-college cultural festival, will be organised by the Punjab Institute of Management and Technology (PIMT), Mandi Gobindgarh, on March 24.

Students from professional and other colleges will participate in various events like folk and western dances, quiz, rangoli, mehndi, antakshari, choreography, “sell it,” “turncoat,” creative writing, cartooning, collage-making, modeling, fashion show and solo song. A software brain game will also be organised.

Students given roll of honour

Ludhiana, March 17
Nine students received roll of honour at the annual convocation held at the Khalsa College for Women, Civil Lines, here today. Dr S.S. Johl, Vice-Chairman of the Punjab State Planning Board was the chief guest.

Those honoured are Shilpa, Mamta Sayal, Sheetal, Priya Gupta, Gurmeet, Gaganpreet, Inu Arora, Inderpreet and Isha Gupta. Those who received the roll of honour in NCC and sports are Manpreet, Karanjeet, Rupinder, Manjinder, Mandeep, Harleen Kalsi and Shikha while Geetika Goyal and Sunaina received the college colour for excelling in cultural activities.

As many as 78 students were honoured with the college colour for socio-cultural activities. Merit certificates were given to 27 students for academics, three got it for social and cultural achievements while two got it for sports. Five girls from the college badminton and cricket teams were also awarded on the occasion.

Dr S.S. Johl said when people getting good salaries go on strike it pained him. There are 30 lakh unemployed persons in Punjab and those with jobs should perform their duty faithfully. He was presented with a guard of honour by NCC cadets.

Dr Varinder Kaur Thind, Principal, read out the annual report. As many as 1,030 students were given degrees.

Children take part in colouring contest

Ludhiana, March 17
A total of 120 children participated in a colouring contest at Cherryfields Nursery School, Atam Nagar, here today.
The participants were given sheets from HDFC bank on which outlines of animals and flowers had been printed. Using various colour schemes, the children painted these with crayon colours. Mr Sunil Sharma, in charge of the HDFC Children’s Plan, encouraged them.

In the first group, Ankita Jain and Lakshay Sharma, students of Sacred Heart Convent Senior Secondary School, were declared first. In the second group, Vanshika Jattey and Aparna Dey of BCM Arya Model Senior Secndary School were declared winners. In the third group, Harshit Gupta and Isher Singh stood first. In the fourth group, Ishwinder Kaur and Sahib Singh were declared winners.

All participants were awarded participation certificates. Refreshment was served to them after the competition.
