Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, March 2
A blood donation camp was organised at Gujranwala Guru Nanak Khalsa College of Pharmacy for thalassemic children getting treatment at the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) yesterday.

A team of doctors and technicians of the DMCH conducted the camp under the supervision of Dr Amarjit Kaur, Associate Professor and Head, Department of Transfusion Medicine. As many as 38 units of blood were collected, informed Dr Hitesh Narang, Assistant Professor, Department of Transfusion Medicine, DMCH.

A talk on pre natal diagnosis and thalassemia was delivered by Dr Parveen Sobti, Associate Professor and in charge, Thalassemia unit, DMCH.

Presently 168 children are registered with the thalassemia unit of DMCH.

Thalassemia is the most common inherited disorder in the world and Punjab is the one of the worst affected states. Three to 15 per cent of Punjabi population has the thalassemia trait. Unfortunately, people have very little awareness about the disease. Many of these patients die because they don’t get one to two units of blood after every 15 to 20 days.

Those interested in donating blood for the thalassemic children can contact Dr Amarjit Kaur at the Department of Transfusion Medicine, DMCH.
