14 soldiers among 17 hurt in IED blast Srinagar, February 15 The IED was planted in a hand-cart and exploded at 3.30 p.m. as an Army convoy reached the market area in
Qazigund, 80 km from here, on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, he said adding that 14 security force personnel and three civilians sustained injuries and the vehicle carrying the jawans was also damaged. The civilian vehicle was part of the convoy which was on its way to Srinagar from Jammu, the spokesman said without stating whether the civilians injured were in the bus or
pedestrains. The injured jawans have been shifted to the military hospital for treatment, a defence spokesman said. He said the area had been cordoned off and a manhunt launched to nab the militants. No militant outfit has claimed the responsibility for the blast so far but officials suspect the hand of the Hizbul Mujahideen which has carried out several similar attacks on security forces recently in Parimpora and Lawaypora in the outskirts of Srinagar. Two persons, including a militant of the Pakistan-backed Lashker-e-Toiba were killed and a housewife injured in separate militancy-related incidents overnight even as two militants surrendered in Kashmir, official sources said today. JAMMU: Security forces have busted two militant hideouts in Rajouri and Poonch districts of Jammu division and recovered arms and explosives, official sources said here on Sunday. During the search operation in the Surankote area of Poonch district, security forces busted a militant hideout and recovered from it one under barrel grenade launcher and 43 rounds of Pika gun ammunition, they said.

People’s Conference meeting on new leader today Srinagar, February 15 A decision to this effect had been taken by his elder brother, Mr Bilal Ghani Lone, as chairman of the five-member supreme council of the party. Mr Bilal Lone is a representative of the People’s Conference in the separatist conglomeration of the All-Parties Hurriyat Conference led by Mr Moulvi Abbas Ansari, Mr Bilal Lone told TNS today that he had already written a letter to the APHC Chairman, Moulvi Abbas Ansari. “Since the People’s Conference is a constituent of the APHC, the issue of its leadership is a matter of consideration for all constituent members of the Hurriyat”, Mr Bilal commented. The party continued to be a constituent of the Hurriyat Conference. He added. To discuss the issue, an executive committee and general council meeting would be held tomorrow and it was for the APHC to consider the issue of leadership of the People’s Conference, Mr Bilal commented. Reacting sharply against the move, Mr Sajjad Lone said his elder brother’s decision was “unconstitutional” and Mr Bilal had no right to expel the chairman without taking into confidence the working committee members. He had also called a meeting of the working committee of his party that might be held here on Monday or Tuesday to decide the “future course of action”. He accused two former chairmen and senior leaders of the APHC, Mr Abdul Ghani Bhat and Mr Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, for instigating Mr Bilal against him. “Since they can not answer my letter to Mirwaiz, they have taken such a decision,” he said. Mr Sajjad had written the letter to former APHC chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq for his participation in the funeral of top militant leader Rafeeq Ahmad Dar alias Ledri early last week. Dar, operational commander of Al-Umar Mujahideen, had been accused of the assassination of Abdul Ghani Lone. Commenting over the issue Mr Bilal said it was an ideological war as Mr Sajjad was unaware of the “ground situation” as he had been away from Kashmir for nearly 14 years, and became the chairman of the party only after the assassination of his father. He added that some party workers, including his younger brother Sajjad, were working against the spirit laid down by his father. |
Bhim Singh resigns from coalition panel Jammu, February 15 Mr Bhim Singh told mediapersons here that the style of working of the PDP and the Congress leaders had left him with no choice but to resign. He said during the past 15 months the committee had met thrice and there was no meeting during the past six months. The Panthers Party chief blamed the Congress and the PDP for not fulfilling promises made in the common minimum programme. He said nothing had been done for implementing the Wazit Committee report and instead of redressing the grievances of the public the government had pursued militant-friendly policies. Mr Bhim Singh said the government “can spend over Rs 50 crore on the rebels but it has not fulfilled its commitment of providing relief to the border migrants in the Jammu region.” He said the Panthers Party, which is a constituent of the coalition, was not consulted when the militant rehabilitation plan was framed. Asked whether the Panthers Party will withdraw support to the coalition government, he said: “The Mahabharta has begun and you will see what steps I will take in the future.” He also asked the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister to explain whether they had approved the militant rehabilitation scheme. |
