Prostate check-up must after 40 years: expert
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, February 14
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a non-malignant enlargement of the prostate due to excessive growth of both glandular and stromal elements of the gland. The problem associated with the prostatic growth that characteristics BPH in men is the result of this anatomic location surrounding the urethra at the outlet of the bladder.

About 50 per cent of men above the age of 50 are at risk to this problem. Early assessment and investigation can prevent any untoward complication to the kidneys and the urinary tract. Symptoms due to BPH can be successfully managed by medications and patients can be treated by endoscopic removal of the prostate gland. This was stated by Dr Parminder Singh Sethi, visiting consultant urologist from California, USA, during an interaction with the faculty and students of the Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) here yesterday.

He emphasised that every male must have a prostate check up once a year after the age of 40. This should include a visit to the urologist, have a digital rectal examination (DRE) and a blood test (PSA) and a trans-rectal ultrasound of the prostate (TRUS) if necessary.

TB treatment gets good response
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, February 14
The Central Government-aided scheme for tuberculosis patients, Directly Observed Treatment (DOT), which was introduced in December, 2003, has got a very good response in the district. Health officials stated that more than 4,200 patients were regularly taking the medicine.

Giving details about the success of the project, Dr S.N.Tiwari, Civil Surgeon, said the industrial city had provided jobs to the migrant population. But unfortunately majority of them suffer from tuberculosis and have no resources to get medication.

“The diagnosis of the disease under the scheme will be based on sputum microscopy instead of chest X-ray,” said Dr Tiwari.

He further added that under the DOT system health workers and NGOs give medicines to patients under supervision. “Though the programme has been started in seven more districts of Punjab, but patients in Ludhiana have benefited the most. Patiala district comes at number two,” claimed Dr Tiwari. The patients can get medicine on every alternate day from the tuberculosis units.

Ludhiana district with a population of 30,30,352 has been divided into seven areas in this regard. Each part has been named as a tuberculosis unit.
