Cong meeting skips contentious issues Shimla, February 14 Mr Ashok Gehlot, in charge of party affairs in the state, Mr Virbhadra Singh, Chief Minister, Mrs Vidya Stokes, PCC chief, Mr Anand Sharma, AICC spokesperson, and Mr Ved Prakash, national secretary of the party, addressed party men. However, none of the leaders touched the issues revamping the Pradesh Congress Committee in which seven posts of office-bearers are vacant, and reinduction of the expelled leaders in the party. Mr Gehlot warned Congressmen that the BJP, which was desperate to retain power at the Centre, could resort to any means in the Lok Sabha poll. He said besides malicious propaganda of the BJP, the VHP and the RSS, party men should guard against rigging during polling. Mr Gehlot asked the workers to expose the real face of Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He charged Mr Vajpayee with doublespeak. Mr Virbhadra Singh said the government had adopted the party election manifesto as a policy document and many promises had already been fulfilled. Mrs Stokes said the party which won the Shimla Municipal Corporation poll in 2002 and the Assembly elections in 2003, would complete the hat-trick of victories by winning all four parliamentary seats. Mr Anand Sharma said the BJP was squandering taxpayers’ money to boost its electoral prospects. It had released advertisements projecting its achievements at a cost of Rs 750 crore. Besides members of the Pradesh Congress Committee, presidents of district and block units, heads of frontal organisations of the party and its various cells, all legislators and members of the AICC from the state attended the meeting. Meanwhile, the state election committee of the Congress today authorised the party President, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, to the candidates for the four parliamentary seats in the state. The committee, which met here under the presidenship of Mrs Vidya Stokes, PCC chief, adopted a one-line resolution authorising Mrs Gandhi to select the party nominees. The resolution was moved by Mr Virbhadra Singh, Chief Minister, and supported by Mrs Stokes. It was decided that Mr Virbhadra Singh, Mrs Vidya Stokes and Mr Sat Mahajan would shortlist the applications and draw up a panel of candidates for all seats in consultation with Mr Gehlot. The panel would be forwarded to the high command. As many as 46 applications have been received for the party ticket — 29 from the Hamirpur constituency, nine from Kangra, five from Mandi and three from Shimla (reserved). However, none of those, who are being seriously considered for the party ticket, have applied. |

He said the BJP leader was now claiming to be the biggest benefactor of OBCs. The BSP secretary also criticised the Congress for not implementing the Mandal Commission report in toto.
