Change in liquor policy on the anvil
IMFL may come under licence system

The Punjab Government is contemplating bringing changes in the liquor policy for 2004-05 and may introduce licence system for the Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) and continue with the open auction for the liquor vends.

Industrialists meet minister on
labour woes
Ludhiana, February 8
Feeling harassed by trade unions, a delegation of some leading industrialists today met the Minister of State for Health and Heavy Industries, Dr Vallabh Bhai Kathiria. Dr Kathiria was on a visit to the city to attend a function organised by Shri Vivekanand Swarg Ashram Trust here today.

Govt spending 1,500 cr on infrastructure, says minister
Ludhiana, February 8
The state government has chalked out a plan to strengthen infrastructure in the state in a systematic manner. A sum of Rs 1,500 crore is being spent through the state Infrastructure Development Board to execute different projects, including the widening and strengthening of main roads, construction of link roads and railway overbridges. This will ensure fast industrialisation of the state.

Villager buried alive
Ludhiana, February 8
Kaka Singh (36) of Akhara village was buried alive while Binder Singh, also of the same village, was saved when they were digging a well at Konke Kalan village.

SAD elections delayed again
Khanna, February 8
The process of organisational elections of the Shiromani Akali Dal, which was to be completed in February, has been delayed again due to parliamentary elections. As per party election programme, the process was to begin in January to elect circle presidents and district presidents in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

Govt ‘selling out’ national interests, says CITU

The left-supported Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) today charged the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance government with "selling out" national interests to big multinational companies.

PSEB pensioners hail merger of DA

Pak artistes hope for better ties with India
Ludhiana, February 8
The recent thaw in the Indo-Pak relations and the conciliatory stance adopted by the Pakistani President, Gen Pervez Musharraf also reflects feelings and sentiments of masses of Pakistan. According to Madeeha Gauhar and Shahid Nadeem, leading theatre personalities from Pakistan, the winds of change are blowing in their country and the people think that they should live in peace and harmony with their neighbour.

600 examined at TB camp
Ludhiana, February 8
The Ludhiana TB Eradication Society, an NGO comprising doctors and industrialists of the city, organised a TB-cum-Medicine Distribution Camp here yesterday. The event was organised in association with Stelco Steels Limited and NUCON Switchgears (P) Limited on the premises of the latter. As many as 600 workers were examined during the camp.

The Union Minister of State for Health, Dr Vallabh Bhai Kathiria, today said that health was the top priority of the National Democratic Alliance government. However ,it was for state governments to implement the schemes of the Centre.

Dismal day for Punjab zone

Punjab zone had a dismal day today as the hosts made an exit in both basketball and volleyball on the penultimate day of the North Zone Employees Provident Fund Tournament being organised by the sub-regional office at the Punjab Agricultural University ground here. In the semi final (volleyball), Punjab zone gave some anxious moments to Haryana zone before going down in straight sets 18-25, 17-25 and 16-25.

I will play soon, says Jugraj

Drag flicker Jugraj Singh hopes that he will be playing on his birthday, which falls on April 22. He said this at Jarkhar village, near here, yesterday where he was felicitated by the Sports Club. He was given the Surjit Singh Randhawa Award for his outstanding contribution in the field of hockey.
