Month-long camp to detect osteoporosis from today
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, January 15
To create awareness about osteoporosis, a disease which causes the bones to become fragile, a month-long detection camp is being organised in the Capital tomorrow.

Experts point out that osteoporosis which affects the bones and makes them susceptible to break easily is assuming epidemic proportion in the country with about five to eight crore people suffering from it.

Dr Ambrish Mithal, Senior Consultant Endocrinology and Osteoporosis at Apollo Hospital, said that if not prevented and left untreated, osteoporosis could lead to thin and porous bones which ultimately breaks resulting in fracture of hip, spine and wrist. Osteoporosis generally affects people after 35 and women are four times more prone to it than men.

A hip fracture mostly requires hospitalisation and major surgery. It impairs a person’s ability to walk unassisted and may cause prolonged or permanent disability or in about 30 per cent cases, it could prove fatal. Spinal and vertebral fractures also have serious consequences, including loss of height, back pain and deformity.

Heart Care Foundation of India Executive Vice-Chairman and IMA New Delhi Branch president K K Agarwal said HCFI, along with New Delhi Municipal Council and IMA New Delhi Branch, would organise a month-long Osteoporosis BMD Bone Dexa Camp from tomorrow to mark the death anniversary of its founder Chairman Dr K L Chopra. The camp to be held in Defence Colony would be inaugurated by Delhi Health Minister Yoganand Shastri.

Dr Agarwal said osteoporosis could be prevented by regular exercise and intake of milk, calcium and Vitamin D.

The disease cannot be cured but only controlled though fractures could be prevented by the regular intake of medicine.

To prevent osteoporosis fractures, early diagnosis was important, which could be done by determining the Bone Mineral Density by DXA technique.

The HCFI would provide the Osteoporosis BMN test, which is non-invasive and painless, at the camp at Rs 300 while generally the cost of the test is more than Rs 1,500 in any hospital. The test could detect osteoporosis, determine the risk for fracture and monitor the response to treatment.

Dr Mithal said consumption of a calcium-rich diet, adequate proteins, exposure to sunlight especially in winter, and exercise like walking, jogging and stair climbing could help reduce the loss of mineral.

Weightlifting exercises also help in reducing osteoporosis risk while the intake of vitamin V through green leafy vegetables also helps. Consumption of excess alcohol and soft drinks should be avoided to reduce the loss of bone density, he informed.
