Rheumatoid arthritis can strike at any
age, says doctor
Tribune News Service

Mohali, December 28
“Apart from joints, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) can affect lungs, eyes, skin and nerves and is a serious illness requiring aggressive treatment under the supervision of a specialist. Thus skin rashes and eye problems should be examined in this light.”

This was stated by Dr S.S. Lehl of Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, at a seminar organised at Silver Oaks Hospital here today.

Stating that the rheumatoid arthritis is a crippling disease and affects younger individuals commonly between 20 to 50 years of age, the doctors attending the seminar emphasised that it can strike at any age.

The doctors who spoke at the seminar included Prof S.D. Deodhar, Dr Vikas Agarwal, Dr Ajay Wanchu and Dr Ravi Gupta. The doctors explained to the audience that while osteoarthritis was an old age problem occurring mainly due to wear and tear of the joints, RA is a painful disease and if left untreated it shortens the life of an individual by at least 10 to 20 years.

Pointing out that the exact cause of RA is still unknown making it difficult to find a definite cure for the problem.

The doctors, in an interactive session after the seminar cleared a large number of doubts of the patients regarding the medicines they were taking for RA, the side-effects, the amount of exercises and the kind of exercise that an RA patient could undertake.

Charges incorrect, says PGI
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, December 28
The Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in a press note issued here today dismissed as incorrect the allegations regarding apathy towards a patient, 12-year-old Deepak, in a news report published in The Tribune on December 24.

Prof S.N.Mathuriya said the patient was under investigation and was never advised admission to the ward. There are limited beds and stretchers in the ESOPD where critically sick patients are kept. Hence, many patients have to stay outside.

Prof Mathuriya said it was also incorrect to say that “he was unable to sit” because he had arrived walking. It is also incorrect to say “who listens to poor” because this patient who had not declared himself a poor at the time of getting his hospital card was investigated free of charge.

It has been also denied that doctors were approached a number of times and also incorrect to say that the “attendant was rebuked” because the patient has not been admitted till date.
