After Jagraon and Ludhiana an illegal immigration racket through marriages with fake NRI girls has surfaced in Mandi Ahmedgarh. Five persons of the alleged gang, including a couple of Ludhiana, have been arrested.

YC man threatens to expose senior leaders in Guddu case
Ludhiana, December 23
The ‘Guddu controversy’ involving tainted cop Shamsher Singh Guddu today took a new turn when a Youth Congress leader threatened to expose certain senior Congress leaders, high ranking police officers and other politicians, if the state government did not arrest the cop immediately and ordered a CBI inquiry into his alleged illegal activities.

Candidate in MC poll charged with fraud
Ludhiana, December 23
Mr Anurag Verma, Deputy Commissioner, has written to the district police chief to register a criminal case against Mr Kamaljit Singh, a candidate in the municipal elections held last year from ward 6 in the Lajpat Nagar locality here, for allegedly committing a forgery by procuring a false Scheduled Castes’ certificate, on the basis of which he unsuccessfully contested the election from the ward reserved for the scheduled castes.

Confusion over school, college timings

Even though the District Magistrate had yesterday passed orders that no school and college of the district should start before 10 am, the timings still remain variable in most of these institutes.

Providential escape for two as truck falls into nullah
Ludhiana, December 23
The driver and the conductor of a truck had a providential escape when their vehicle fell into the Buddha Nullah after skidding from a dilapidated bridge at Talwara village, about 20 km from here. According to Mr Lakhbir Singh, an ex-sarpanch of Talwara village, the bridge is in a dilapidated condition and has not been repaired since 1934, the year of its construction.

PAU students boycott exams
Ludhiana, December 23
Protesting against the evaluation system, members of the Punjab Agricultural University Students’ Association (PAUSA) boycotted their examination on the second day today.

The city continues to be in the grip of a severe cold wave although the dense fog that kept the normal life paralysed for the past one week or so had abated to a great extent by the morning today.

Two killed in road mishaps
Ludhiana, December 23
The Civil Lines police, on the statement of Mr. Jarnail Singh, a resident of Jodhan village, registered a case yesterday against Pawan Kumar, a resident of the Dugri Road area. The complainant had stated that the accused, who was driving a truck, hit his brother, Balbir Singh, in front of the general bus stand on Monday as a result of which he died on the spot.

Online mobile credit card launched
Ludhiana, December 23
Reliance Infocomm and Citibank today unveiled India's first online mobile credit card payment solution, enabling direct payment from Reliance IndiaMobile handsets. The first application to use this payment mode is RIM-bill payment, a service that facilitates subscribers to pay mobile bills from the R World.

Hero Cycles, OBC sign MoU on bicycle financing

Hero Cycles Limited, Ludhiana, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Oriental Bank of Commerce (OBC) for the financing of bicycles through its branches.

Mann seeks concessions for Punjab industry

The Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) president, Mr Simranjit Singh Mann, has sought special concessions for industry in Punjab on a par with those provided in the neighbouring Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal and Jammu and Kashmir.

Xmas celebrations at schools
Ludhiana, December 23
The staff and students of Atam Devki Niketan, Kidwai Nagar, celebrated Christmas at a function held here today.
On the occasion, the school was tastefully decorated with stars, bells and balls. Kids came dressed up like Santa Claus and fairies. A teacher dressed up as Santa Claus distributed sweets and gifts among all kids.

Two-day book fair at school
Ludhiana, December 23
A two-day book fair was inaugurated at BCM Arya Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, on Tuesday. Books on fiction, puzzles, calligraphy and science were on display.

Drama festival at Samrala
Samrala, December 23
The sixth drama festival and cultural programme was conducted by the Paras Rang Manch Samrala in the Harnam Nagar ground last night. Mr Amrik Singh Dhillon, MLA, Samrala, inaugurated the function, while Mr Kirpal Singh Khattran and Dhanwant Singh Grewal lighted the ‘shama’.

Gujjarwal sports  festival begins
Ludhiana, December 23
The annual sports festival being organised by the Amarjit Singh Grewal Club at Gujjarwal village near here got off to a colourful start. Mr Jagdish Singh Garcha, former Punjab Minister and an MLA of the area formally declared the festival open.

City revenue officials in north zone team

Four officials from Ludhiana, on the basis of their performance during the recently conducted Sub-Zone Revenue Sports Meet at Chandigarh on December 18 and 19, have been selected to represent the north zone in the forthcoming All-India Revenue Sports Meet in Kolkata from January 19 to 21. They include M S Khan, Rajiv Puri, Jaspal Singh and Major Singh.
