Gujjarwal sports festival begins

Ludhiana, December 23
The annual sports festival being organised by the Amarjit Singh Grewal Club at Gujjarwal village near here got off to a colourful start.
Mr Jagdish Singh Garcha, former Punjab Minister and an MLA of the area formally declared the festival open.

Today, the preliminary rounds of bullock cart races, football, kabaddi, basketball (girls) were held. In kabaddi (52 kg), Bahla beat Aasi Sidhsar, Fatth beat Nihaluwal, Harmana beat Raroli Bhai, Chaminda beat Gujjarwal. In basketball (girls), Baba Lodhiana Academy of Ludhiana defeated Khalsa Academy of Ludhiana and in football, Jassowal beat Dango 1-0, Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha Club defeated Baddowal 4-1.

In dog races, as many as 61 dogs participated in heats and the final will be held tomorrow. Matches in basketball, football, kabaddi (senior) will be conducted on December 24 when the former Punjab Chief Minister, Punjab, Mr Parkash Singh Badal will the chief guest. Mr Kewal Singh Dhillon, senior vice president, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee will preside over the function on the second day.

Ludhiana softball probables

Ludhiana, December 23
The following Ludhiana players have been selected as probables for the camp to be held at the local Ramgarhia Girls College, Miller Ganj from December 25 to January 3.
From these players, the Ludhiana players will be shortlisted for their participation in the 10th Punjab State Softball Championship scheduled to be held at the same venue on December 28 and 29 (women) and on January 4 and 5, according to Mr P.N. Passi, honorary secretary, Punjab Softball Association.

The names of the probables are: (women)- Shaminder Kaur, Rajpreet , Gaganpreet, Gurpreet Kaur, Jyoti, Meenakashi, Rajni, Prapreet Kaur, Amanpreet Kaur, Karamjit Kaur, Asha Neetu, Gurpreet, Sonu and Shruti.

Men-Dharampal, Nirmal Singh, Ramesh, Bhupinder Singh, Dinesh, Ajit Singh, Deepak, Ravi Dutt, Omkar Singh, Sandeep, Akash, Satish Kumar, Harpreet Singh, Kulbir Singh and Jarnail Singh.

City revenue officials in north zone team

Ludhiana, December 23
Four officials from Ludhiana, on the basis of their performance during the recently conducted Sub-Zone Revenue Sports Meet at Chandigarh on December 18 and 19, have been selected to represent the north zone in the forthcoming All-India Revenue Sports Meet in Kolkata from January 19 to 21. They include M S Khan, Rajiv Puri, Jaspal Singh and Major Singh.

The team of Ludhiana officials reaped a rich haul of medals and emerged overall winners in the meet at Chandigarh. M S Khan finished ahead of others to clinch the gold medal in the 5 km walk in the plus 50 years group while Major Singh also from Ludhiana, finished runners-up in this event.

Jaspal Singh won silver medals in the long jump and the 100m race in the plus 50 years group. In the plus 40 years group, Rajiv Puri won a silver medal in the long jump. Surinder Marwaha went down fighting in the billiards final and won the silver medal.
