Four city teachers in PU Syndicate
Deepkamal Kaur

Ludhiana, December 16
With four local college teachers and principals getting elected to the Panjab University Syndicate in the elections held yesterday in Chandigarh, staff and students of over 30 affiliated colleges here feel that the city has got adequate representation in the decision-making body, this year.

Last year, the city was represented by just one local member, Lala Lajpat Rai, MP. The college teachers and the students had always been complaining that he remained too busy with political activities and could hardly spare time to listen to their problems. It was even difficult for them to gather information regarding matters discussed in Syndicate meetings, held on the PU campus, they said.

However, in the elections held yesterday, four local members, including Mr Jaswant Gill, Principal, Guru Nanak National College, Doraha, Mr B.D. Budhiraja Principal, Kamla Lohtia Sanatan Dharam College, Prof Satish Sharma, Arya College and Prof Mukesh Arora, SCD Government College, have won the elections. Mr Gill has been elected in the arts faculty with 24 votes while Prof Arora has won from the language faculty with 11 votes. Mr Budhiraja and Professor Sharma have won from the combined faculty with 43 and 36 votes, respectively.

Talking to Ludhiana Tribune, Professor Arora said he was satisfied with the results of the poll. He said the teachers and the students in the city would have four academicians among them to put forward their grievances. Regarding his main targets, he said he would strive hard to get advanced professional diploma courses introduced for students in local colleges and the university regional centre.

Prof Arora said the students had been complaining that they still had to go to the university campus to avail themselves adjustment of fee, get detail marks certificate or apply for any corrections in it. He said he would try to get their problems solved by getting a counter opened up especially for the students in the regional centre in the PU Extension Library.

Professor Sharma said he was happy but dissatisfied that the BJP group has won most of the seats in the absence of Congress MLAs and MPs who were busy in New Delhi.

Prof Rajinder Bhandari, PU Senator, said he was happy as 11 of the 13 seats in the Syndicate were won by his group. He said the teachers and the students in the city had a reason to be happy as they would be easily able to keep in touch with the matters of the Syndicate from time to time.
