Agarkar is the hero for Kapil
Abhijit Chatterjee
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, December 16
If Kapil Dev, who was the architect of India’s victory over Australia in their den last time in 1981, in Melbourne, had his way, then the ‘‘man-of-the-match award’’ for the second Test between India and Australia at Adelaide on Tuesday, would have gone to Ajit Agarkar. His haul of six wickets in Australia’s second innings set the team on the road to victory. This was, incidently, Agarkar’s best bowling figures of his career which has seen quite a few ups and downs.

In a match where the hosts had posted a 500 plus score in their first innings and the visitors had conceded a first innings lead, it was Agarkar’s performance which turned the game around. This performance should be the pride of any fast bowler, Kapil Dev told The Tribune over the telephone from Delhi. Kapil was of the view that if all the Indian fast bowlers worked together then putting the pressure on Australia in the remaining two Tests would not be a problem. ‘‘It is a pity that the Indian fast bowlers are not getting the credit they deserve. It is the batsmen who are feted every time the Indians notch up a victory, especially abroad.’’

Kapil was of the view that Rahul Dravid and V.V.S. Laxman did what was expected of them but the performance of Ajit Agarkar was something ‘‘very unexpected but very much needed by the team .’’ Bowlers in India are always under rated and Ajit Agarkar’s case is not different, Kapil said.

The former India captain was of the view that Anil Kumble has had his best time and his haul of five wickets in Australia’s first innings at Adelaide would not make him change his opinion. And if all the Indian fast bowlers perform in tandem in the remaining two Tests, then there is no reason why India cannot put the Australians on the defensive was Kapil’s parting remarks.

For Kapil’s former coach Desh Prem Azad, the victory ‘‘is only the beginning of better things ahead. We have been waiting for this victory for over 20 years and it could not have come a day too soon.’’

Celebrating India’s win at his Chandigarh home, Azad was of the opinion that we should not look back and look ahead to the two remaining matches of the series. ‘‘We can win the series provided we play positive cricket. With this victory, India’s tail is up and we should play to our strength. In the remaining two games of the series ,’’ was the comment of a man who has trained any number of first class and Test cricketers for the country.

Another Azad protege, Chetan Sharma, was on cloud nine when India romped home to the historic win at Adelaide. Chetan was of the view that the Indians had done a ‘‘great job’’ and India ‘‘can win the series.’’ And in case India won the series, Chetan promised that he would personally go to the airport to receive the Indian team in what would be one of their finest hours ever.

Expressing his heartiest jubilation, Surinder Singh ‘Baijee’, an ardent cricket follower and secretary of the Chandigarh Cricket Association, affiliated to the Haryana Cricket Association, said this fantastic win over the unofficial world champions Australia had made every Indian cricket lover happy. He said the credit for the win went to Rahul, Laxman and Agarkar. He said earlier people used to think only about Sachin Tendulkar and not beyond that whenever India played at the international level. But now with this historic win, every other player in the team would have to keep up to the expectations of the people across the country.
