Golfers should do warm-up exercises, says fitness trainer Chandigarh, December 3 Arnold said in golf, one needed to do warm-up exercises so as to prevent oneself from any future complications. He laid stress on yoga exercises and said many, like arm-twisting while bending sideways, were good for golfers. Stretching one’s back without jerks and with gradual movements could be good for a player, he added. Arnold prescribed a few warm-up exercises before moving on to first tee. These included, walking for 5 or 10 minutes, followed by arm-circling. Arnold said, even the arms should be swung gently circular in motion forward and backward several times. Third warm-up exercise would be to have full squats, without a club, then holding club with each hand, so that the club was raised above one’s hand when one raised one’s arms. Then fourth warm-up exercise would be to go in for half -standing twist without a club and with a club behind one’s back. Then finally, golf swing without a ball could be done several times. Arnold suggested that for all golfers, a post-game exercise schedule should be adhered to. Here the basic aim was to help the muscles used in the game return to their normal resting length. These could be summed up as exercises relating to upper back, shoulder, triceps, forearms, spine rotators,
sidebands, back of legs and lower back. Asked if the age group also mattered while taking exercises pertaining to golf, Arnold said, for below 12 years, we could do away with weights, but the sit-ups, press-ups, Swiss rolls and various flexibility exercises would help the young golfers. He suggested few programmes to improve fitness, which could be done by any golfer playing at the competitive level. These included, improving stability, hamstring flexibility and spinal rotation, then at second level, by adding abdominal work on exhalation. At third level, the awareness to pelvic stability and strengthening deep core muscles should be done. Arnold said, he was amazed to see the presence of 400 golfers at the club, which was rare. Indian golfers had talent and skills, but needed a little modification in their exercise schedule along with regulated dietary habits, he opined. |
