All consultations will be provided free of cost by specialists during this period. Dr Sanjiv Malik, Hub Manager, Max Hospital, Noida, said, “Over five per cent of the population in India suffers from chronic respiratory diseases like allergy, asthma, chronic bronchitis emphysema and tuberculosis or their sequel. They often run a protracted course punctuated by an acute exacerbation and remissions cause disabling morbidies, often requiring hospitalization, loss of schooling and workdays. However, it is important to know that early diagnosis and proper clinical management is the key to keeping these patients healthy. There are also effective measures to prevent the occurrence of these diseases, at any rate mitigate suffering from them.”

Allergy and asthma are the most common respiratory diseases affecting all ages, including children and the elderly. This manifests as rhinitis (nose block and sneezing) sinusitis, cough, expectoration, breathlessness and wheezing. These often starts as seasonal problems and in many cases becomes perennial, which is caused by inhalation of pollen, fungi, food grain or house dust containing mites viral infections etc. A precise diagnosis can be made by clinical examination, breathing and allergy test. Treatment and prevention are effective by aerosol inhalation. Home management is possible by properly educating the patient and parents (in case of children). The patient can thus lead a normal life.

Chronic bronchitis emphysema also clinically manifests like asthma with cough, expectoration, breathlessness, wheezing and respiratory failure (deficiency of oxygen and increase in carbon dioxide). This is often related to smoking or inhalation of polluted air. The disease can be effectively prevented and the patient can live a normal life. Tuberculosis is one of the most important diseases in India, being highly infectious in nature. Common symptoms are cough, expectoration, fever, pain in chest etc.

In India, in spite of very effective treatment, one patient is dying every minute-largely due to the lack of proper treatment. Diagnosed early the disease is completely curable in six months. The simple diagnostic methods are sputum examination and chest X–ray, doctors assert.
