‘‘Papa, take me home,’’ are the words that continue to haunt the man who lost his daughter after she was allegedly harassed by her in-laws for more dowry. The alleged ‘‘torture’’ and ‘‘inhuman’’ behaviour meted out to her forced her to choose death.

SAD, BJP plan joint rally on December 1
Ludhiana, November 27
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) are learnt to be jointly planning a show of strength at Ropar on December 1, when SAD president and former Chief Minister, Parkash Singh Badal appears in a court in response to the summons issued after the Vigilance Bureau filed a challan against him on corruption charges. The SAD and the BJP have asked their cadres to reach Ropar on the said date.

UK computers for Punjab schools
Ludhiana, November 27
The students from government schools of the state will soon get 300 computers from the UK. The computers, along with several hi-tech accessories, have already been shipped to Mumbai and will soon reach the Dhandari dry port here.

Deadline for autorickshaw stickers extended
Ludhiana, November 27
The District Transport Office has decided to give another week’s time to receive applications for issuing stickers to autorickshaws, which were plying with required documents. Mr M. S. Sandhu District Transport Officer, said that now the autorickshaw owners would be allowed to submit their applications from December1 to 5. Earlier they were asked to apply for stickers from November 17 to 21 along with the necessary documents.

CPI holds rally against economic policies

Activists of the Communist Party of India (CPI) organised a protest march from Chattar Singh Park to Mini-secretariat here and held a rally against the economic polices being pursued by the state and Union governments under the influence of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), World Bank and International Monetary Fund.

‘Jail chalo’ stir to focus on amnesty
Ludhiana, November 27
The Lok Bhalai Party, headed by former Union Minister, Mr Balwant Singh Ramoowalia, will launch a ‘jail chalo’ agitation in Jalandhar on December 18 instead of Chandigarh to focus on several burning problems like unemployment, general amnesty to around 20,000 Punjabi youths settled abroad, increasing incidents of fraud by travel agents on the pretext of sending abroad and ditched NRI brides, facing the people of Punjab.

Responding to a call given by the All-India Bank Employees Association, the local unit of the Punjab Bank Employees Federation organised a dharna at the Vishwakarma chowk here against financial sector reforms. Employees from several banks also held a demonstration during lunch hour.

2 killed in road mishaps, cases registered
Ludhiana, November 27
The Salem Tabri police yesterday registered a case under sections 279,338 and 304-A of the IPC on a statement of Mr Girdhari Lal, a resident of Lajpat Nagar on Noorwala Road, against Karam Singh, a resident of Chowinda Rehana village in Hoshiarpur district. The complainant had stated that the accused had rammed his tractor into Satish Kumar, a resident of district Una, at Shivpuri chowk on Wednesday morning, due to which he was killed on the spot.

Mobile phones are now a part of the college campus scene. Ludhiana Tribune spoke to some college principals for their reactions to the carrying of mobile phones to colleges by students and whether they should be banned.

An inter-college shabad gayan competition was organised by Gujranwala Guru Nanak Khalsa College here. Principal Gurdip Singh interpreted the philosophy of the first Sikh Guru in scientific terms while Prof Sohinderjit Singh advised students to follow the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev and spread the message of peace and non-violence.

The Hindi Department of Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women, Model Town, organised a seminar on the History of Hindi literature. Principal Anoop Kaur Bansal welcomed Dr Rekha Sharma, Head of the Sanskrit and Hindi Department of Guru Gobind Singh Khalsa College for Women, Chandigarh, and Dr Shakuntala Yadav, incharge of the evening section, Government College for Boys, Ludhiana.

Skit on girls deserted by NRIs
Ludhiana, November 27
Members of the Sur Sangam Club presented a skit based on the life of girls who are engaged to NRIs but are left behind with their parents after marriage. The musical skit was organised by the Sarabha Ladies Club here today. The stage was decorated to give the ambience of a Punjabi village and the artistes were dressed in traditional Punjabi outfits.

Encephalocele patient awaits good Samaritan
Machhiwara, November 27
Amritpal Singh (4), who has been suffering from encephalocele (protrusion of brain tissue through a congential fissure in the skull) since his birth needs a good Samaritan in his life. As luck would have it, Amritpal lost his father Sukhdev Singh on July 25, 2000, in a road accident.

Cosmetics play havoc, says study
Ludhiana, November 27
A study conducted by the Department of Dermatology, Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, for two and a half years on the topic “Adverse reactions to Cosmetics” has shown interesting findings and has exposed how the increasing use of low-quality cosmetics in all age groups is playing havoc with the skin not only women but also men, who are becoming more beauty conscious.

Punjab pip Karnataka in Postal Hockey meet
Ludhiana, November 27
On the second day of the 17th All-India Postal Hockey Tournament being played here at the Astro-turf ground of Punjab Agricultural University, last year’s runners-up Punjab overcame stiff resistance from Karnataka, whom they pipped 1-0 in a thrilling encounter. After the first barren half, Nirmal Singh of the Punjab circle scored the all-important goal just before the long whistle.

Excise raid on jewellery shop
Ludhiana, November 27
Senior officials of the Excise and Taxation Department, led by the Additional Excise and Taxation Commissioner, Mr Kishen Kumar, raided some business establishments here today. While no details were available, it was learnt that the officials seized some important documents relating to the business transactions of these business houses.
