Bonanza awaits DSCL Open National Tennis finalists

A bonanza awaits the men’s and women’s finalists of the 12th DSCL Open National Tennis Championship to be played at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association courts from December 15 to 26.

The championship will carry not only a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh, offered by DCM Shriram Consolidated Ltd, but the finalists will also get return airfare to play an ITF tournament abroad.

Chairman of the DSCL Open Championship Ajay S Shriram said on Wednesday that the winners of the nationals would be given an actual return air fare of Rs 40,000 each while the runners-up would be entitled to actual return fare of up to Rs 20,000 each to play an ITF tournament outside the country.

Mr Ajay Shriram said besides the daily allowance to the junior players as per the All-India Tennis Association (AITA) rules, incentives worth Rs 5000-7000 would be offered to the boys singles and girls singles finalists in each of the three age group categories. He said the DSCL will also offer a special daily allowance for the doubles events.

He said a veterans’ doubles event will be added this year for players above 45 years of age while singles and doubles would be held in the men’s, women’s, boys and girls under-18 and under-14 section, respectively. The boys and girls under-16 categories will have only singles events.

Mr Shriram said the championship would be worth 60 AITA points to the winners and 45 to the runners-up. The losing semi-finalists would pick up 30 points each while the quarter-finalists would collect 15 points each. In the women’s and girls section, the points structure will be 25, 20, 10 and 7.5 respectively.

Mithun to lead Delhi against Railways

Mithun Manhas will lead a 15-member Delhi Ranji Trophy team against Railways in their Elite Group match, to be played at the Karnail Singh Stadium, from November 23 to 26.

Delhi and District Cricket Association sports secretary Sunil Dev said the selected players will undergo a regular practice session at the Jawaharla Nehru Stadium from November 20 at 9 am.

The team: Mithun Manhas (captain), Salil Oberoi, Puru Raj Singh, Vijay Dahiya, Ajay Jadeja, Pradeep Chawla, N S Negi, Varun Kumar, Sarandeep Singh, Rahul Sanghvi, Amit Bhandari, Sanjay Gill, Rajan Gupta, Abhishek Sharma and Kunal Lal. Madan Lal will be the coach and D S Bawa the manager.

Sandeep Sihag stars for Aurobindo

A devastating bowling spell of 5 for 23 by Sandeep Sihag enabled Aurobindo College defeat Kirorimal College by 59 runs in the Delhi University Inter-College Cricket Tournament at the Khalsa College ground.

Scores: Aurobindo College: 193 for 8 in 40 overs (Sandeep 43, Gagandeep 29, Prashant 25, Vikas Chaudhary 23, Mrityunjay Singh 3 for 37, Saurabh Bhambri 2 for 37).

Kirori Mal College: 134 in 32.3 overs (Amit Chaudhary 23, Tejash Anand 20, Sandeep Sihag 5 for 23, Sunil Chaudhary 2 for 24).

GE Capital beat Hudco

GE Capital defeated Hudco by seven wickets in the DG Phadkar Memorial Cricket Tournament at the Teri Oval. Rajendra Prabhala was named the man of the match.

Malhotra seeks inclusion of archery

New Delhi, November 19
President of the All India Sports Council Vijay Kumar Malhotra, who is also the president of the Archery Association of India, has requested to the Indian Olympic Association to include archery in the 2010 Commonwealth Games to be held in New Delhi.

He said out of the 72 countries who would be participating in the Commonwealth Games, 30 were affiliated to the International Archery Association (FITA). He said if archery is included in the Commonwealth Games, India stood a very good chance of winning a gold medal. He also reminded that both the Indian men and women teams have qualified for the Olympic Games to be held in Athens 2004, which was major achievement for Indian archery.

DAV School, Mira Model enter volleyball final

DAV Public School, Pushpanjali and Meera Model (Janakpuri) entered the boys final of the seventh Salwan Inter-School Volleyball Tournament at the Salwan School court. In the semi-finals, DAV defeated Army Public School, Dhaula Kuan 23-11, 25-16, 25-18 while Meera Model School, Janakpuri got the better of New Era Public School 25-11, 25-20, 25-15. In the girls section, Salwan girls and Salwan Public (Afternoon) will contest the final.

Delhi Wrestling

The Delhi Amateur Wrestling Association will host the Delhi State Greco Roman and Free Style Wrestling Championships from November 20 to 23 at the Mother Khazani School, Mungeshpur. Four hundred wrestlers are expected to compete in six weight categories—55kg, 60kg, 74kg, 84kg, 96kg and 96 plus. MTNL general manager Harbans Singh will inaugurate the championship while Satpal will give away the prizes.

Seagram win in Eventus Cup

Seagram defeated HSS BPO by 13 runs in the Eventus Cup Cricket Tournament.

Scores: Seagram: 151 for 7 in 25 overs (Prathmesh Mishra 64, Abhishek Mishra 42, Devender Rawat 3 for 32). HSS BPO: 138 all out in 20.2 overs (Sriram 52, Shara Verma 3 for 23, Mohinder Jhakkar 1 for 12).

Virat Kohli shines for Delhi

Virat Kohli scored a century in the first innings and hit 95 in the second innings as the North Zone Polly Imrigar Under-15 Cricket Tournament match between Delhi and Haryana ended in a draw at the Gurgaon stadium.

Scores: Delhi (1st innings): 192 all out (Virat Kohli 117, Neeraj Bansal 21, Vijay Kharab 6 for 55). Second innings: 186 for 6 declared (Virat Kohli 95, Karan Rai 35 n o, Pawan Bharadwaj 3 for 40).

Haryana (1st innings): 170 all out (Nitin Saini 58, Manan Sharma 3 for 26, Rushil Bhaskar 3 for 9). Second innings: 198 for 2 (Nitin Saini 89, Narender Sharma 65, Manish Dhillon 37 n o).

Delhi gained two points from the match, to take their total to 12 points from three matches.
