PGI winter break from Dec 7
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, November 19
With the month-long winter vacation at the PGI beginning from December 7, this is one time of the year that both the patients and overburdened resident doctors dread.

During the first half, about 150 faculty members shall remain on vacation for December 7 to 21. While December 22, shall be a common working day, the second batch of doctors shall avail themselves of the vacation from December 23 to January 6.

The PGI authorities say that in order to ensure that patients do not face inconvenience and the OPD runs smoothly and operations are done on scheduled dates, the junior and senior residents would be given additional responsibilities. One consultant would always be posted along with resident doctors to ensure proper patient care.

Bursting at the seams due to patient overload, people coming to the PGI from the entire region do face inconvenience, with half the faculty being unavailable. Though the PGI authorities claim that surgeries are performed as per the normal schedule, the already long-waiting period for operations is further stretched.

As is the normal practice during winters, the PGI has not rescheduled the OPD schedule so far. The OPDs will continue to function at the same time on all days including Saturdays and gazetted holidays. It is only on Sundays that the OPDs remain closed.

The resident doctors who put in 12 to 14 hours of duty are given additional OPD, ward and other duties to enable the faculty members to take the vacation. In fact, the summer vacation at the PGI is longer — for two months.
