Semi-final line-up complete

The semi-final line-up was completed in the Nehru Sub-Junior Hockey Tournament at the Shivaji Stadium on Tuesday.

Town High School, Sundergarh (Orissa) got the better of Government Model School, Chandigarh 3-1 while Birsa Munda Vidyapith, Rourkela (Orissa) blanked Young Pioneer’s English School, Imphal (Manipur) 3-0.

In other quarter-final matches, Baba Farid Public School, Faridkot (Punjab) defeated St. Ignatius High School, Gumla 7-5 via tie-breaker while Govt Model School, Jalandhar edged past Bandar Penawar Sports School, Johor (Malaysia) 3-2.

In the first match, Town High School were put in the lead by Dharamdas Vengra in the 12th minute when he converted a penalty corner. The second goal came only in the 47th minute of the second half when Sunil Kujur found the mark.

A minute later, Lalit Baxla added the third goal. Ranjodh Singh pulled off the consolation goal for Chandigarh a minute after the Orissa school were through with their scoring, off a penalty corner.

Birsa Munda got their scoring machine activated in the second half, after a barren first session when Paikash Lakra and Xavier Ekka hit the target immediately after the re-start of the match while Ashish Anmol Minz scored the third goal in the 57th minute when he converted a penalty corner. The most keenly-contested semi-final match was between Baba Farid Public School and St. Ignatius School. In a surprising twist, the Punjab team were down by 0-3 before they hit back to draw level. Deepak Soreng opened the account for St. Ignatious in the 23rd minute, and four minutes later Nirmal Nag slotted home the second goal.

Jagannath Dradh scored their third goal two minutes later as Imphal took a 3-0 lead by half time. On resumption, Faridkot struck home three goals in a nine-minute scoring blitz through Gurjeet Singh, Jaspal Singh and Lakhwinder Singh, the last two goals coming off penalty corners.

With the scores tied 3-3, the tie-breaker rule was enforced in which Faridkot emerged triumphant with Jaspal Singh, Karamjeet Singh, Rakesh Kumar and Harmandeep Singh finding the mark while only Deepak Soreng and Sunil Bhengra could score for Gumla.

In another close match, Mod Ifzul Hayat put the Malaysian School in the lead, which was equalised by Hardeep Singh for

Jalandhar, both the goals coming at the fag end of the first half. Immediately after resumption, Lovepreet Singh put Jalandhar in the lead, but Azrul Azrin levelled the score for the Malaysians. Hardeep Singh once again came to the rescue of the Punjab team when he converted a penalty corner to score the match-winner in the 54th minute.

Wednesday’s fixtures (semi-finals): Town High School, Sundergarh vs Birsa Munda Vidyapitha (2 pm); Baba Farid School vs Govt Model School, Jalandhar (3.30 pm)- Shivaji Stadium.

22 teams for Senior Nehru Hockey

New Delhi, November 11
Top 22 teams of the country will vie for the top prize in the Senior Nehru Hockey Tournament, starting at the Shivaji Stadium on November 14.

The tournament will be played in two phases. In the first phase, matches will be played on a knock-out basis to select four teams to join the eight seeded teams in the second phase. These 12 teams in Phase II will be divided into four groups of three teams each where the matches will be played on a league basis. The seeded teams include defending champions Punjab Police, runners-up Indian Airlines, Air India, Punjab and Sind Bank, Indian Oil, Border Security Force, Bharat Petroleum and Tamilnadu XI.

The tournament will carry an enhanced prize money of Rs 5 lakh with the winners taking home Rs 2.50 lakh and the runners-up standing to benefit Rs 1.50 lakh. The third position finishers will earn Rs 1 lakh.

The 14 teams who will be fighting it out in phase I of the tournament are: ONGC, Indian Universities, Rock Rovers (Chandigarh), Namdhari XI, Patiala XI, Indian Posts, FCI (NZ), EME, ASC, Corps of Signals, MEG, Bangalore, Indian Air Force, Indian Navy and Railway XI.

Gush Club get past State Bank in DDCA League

New Delhi, November 11
Sebi Kukreja slammed 77 as Gush Club defeated State Bank of India (SBI) by three wickets in the DDCA A-I Division League at the RSKP ground.

Scores: SBI: 194 for 7 in 40 overs (Hitesh Sharma 50 n o, Ajay Verma 30, Bhuvnesh Sharma 43 n o).

Gush Club: 196 for 7 in 37.3 overs (Sebi Kukreja 77, Angad Singh 32, Gursharan Singh 28 n o, Vijay Bahadur Mishra 3 for 38).

In another match, Chandni Chowk Gymkhana beat York Club by 48 runs in an A-II Division match at the RSG ground. Scores: Chandni Chowk: 216 all out in 36.4 overs (Raju Bhatti 64, Rajeev Puri 34, Narender Deswal 4 for 29). York Club: 168 for 8 in 40 overs (Naveen Kumar 46, Rajesh Sharma 34, Rajeev Puri 2 for 15).

Young Delhi beat Mayapuri by five wickets in an A-II Division match.

Scores: Mayapuri: 194 for 9 in 40 overs (Ravi Shankar Tripathi 66 n o, Aditya Aima 37, Amit Prakash 4 for 53).

Young Delhi: 195 for 5 in 32.1 overs (Arun Kanojia 33, Sanjay Kumar 45, Ritesh Sinha 3 for 26, Manoj Kumar 2 for 42).

Frank Anthony win

Frank Anthony Public School knocked out S S Khalsa School, Lajpat Nagar through the spin of the coin, after their match ended in a tie, to enter the quarter-final of the 7th H S Sistani Memorial Inter-School Cricket Tournament at the S S Khalsa School ground. Scores: S S Khalsa: 144 for 7 in 25 overs (Gagandeep Singh 50, Nitin Kumar 28, Vijay Pandit 3 for 26). Frank Anthony: 144 for 5 in 25 overs (Vivek Verma 71, Vijay Pandit 36 n o, Chanchal Singh 3 for 14).

Parthasarathy shines

Seventyeight-year-old Swami Parthasarathy took three wickets but could not save his team Vedanta Academy of Lonavala from losing by 52 runs to Gillette in a cricket match held at the Nehru Stadium. Suresh Kumar KOs Vikram

New Delhi, November 11
Suresh Kumar of Chandigarh knocked out Vikram of Uttar Pradesh in the first round of the 60kg bout in the Sports Authority of India Junior Boxing Championship at the Indira Gandhi indoor stadium ring on Tuesday.

Abhinav Bali hits ton in Delhi’s win

New Delhi, November 11
An unbeaten century by Abhinav Bali (119) and finely crafted half centuries by Shikhar Dhawan and Mayank Tehlan helped Delhi beat Jammu and Kashmir by an innings and 151 runs in the Cooch-Behar Trophy Under-19 (North Zone) Cricket Tournament at the Palam Ground. Delhi were also immensely helped by the devastating bowling displays of Wilkins Victor (5 for 38) and Deepak Rai (5 for 18).

Scores: J&K (1st innings): 105 all out in 80 overs (Ubaid Bashir 25, R. Pandit 22, W. Victor 5 for 38, A. Sharma 3 for 18). Second innings: 104 all out in 52.3 overs . Licences of 18 ration depots cancelled for
unfair practices

Ghaziabad, November 11
The licences of 18 ration depots were cancelled by the Civil Supplies Department and another 39 depots were fined to the tune of Rs 16,750 for indulging in unfair practices and violating rules.

The district Civil Supplies Officer, Mr Anup Shankar, said that 779 shops were inspected in the district from November 1 to 8, in which the licence of 18 depots were cancelled.

The District Magistrate, Santosh Yadav, has instructed the Civil Supplies Department that it should ensure the supply of kerosene oil and other essential items at the ration depots even after the special drive came to an end on November 15.

He directed them to act tough with the defaulters and the inspection of ration shops should continue even after the end of the special campaign.
