New MRI scanner being installed
Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, November 11
With the advent of the new 1.5 T GE excite echospeed plus, MRI scanner, presently under installation at the Christian Medical College and Hospital, diagnostic imaging in Punjab has taken a giant step forward.

This MRI offers optimised capabilities of a neuroimager, a cardiovascular system and a wholebody scanner. It will also have MR spectroscopy, diffusion and perfusion imaging, 3-D contrast angiography, MRCP, functional imaging, EPI and advanced cardiac package.

MR spectroscopy shows chemical composition of structures. Discussion and perfusion help in early diagnosis of stroke. MR angiography gives angiogram.

According to Dr John Abraham, Medical Superintendent, “1.5T MRI delivers the shortest pulse sequence parameters and ensures better image quality. With the use of 1.5 T MRI, radiologists will be able to do scans in a single breath hold. This allows faster as well as more accurate scans. For those who get claustrophobic, this machine has a smaller tunnel and the patients enters the equipment partially. The noise is 25 per cent less than contemporary MRIs. Benefits of MRI can be now expanded to more patients, particularly paediatric, geriatric and trauma cases”.

According to Dr T.M. Jaison, Deputy Director and Professor of Cardiology, “MRI is destined to take over cardiac imaging in the near future with precise diagnosis resulting in better treatment of patients of angina, heart attack and congenital heart diseases to name a few. The advanced cardiac package of this machine is a boon for cardiac patients.
