Lecture on youth’s role in nation building

Ludhiana, November 11
Mr K. Satyanarayanan, Executive Director, National HRD Network, delivered a guest lecture on ‘Leadership and youth participation in nation building’ for the students of MBA at Gujranwala Guru Nanak Institute of Management and Technology here today.

A very unassuming Mr Satyanarayanan told the students to become good leaders and nation-builders of tomorrow. He gave various examples like those of Mahatma Gandhi, J.R.D. Tata, Bhagat Singh, Dhirubhai Ambani, Kiran Bedi, Sachin Tendulkar and Narayan Murthy.

Mr Satyanarayanan said a successful leader should have certain traits such as to know oneself, set goals which were specific and time-bound, be well read, have self-respect, believe in the dignity of labour and also the dignity of the individual. The guest lecture was followed by an interactive question answer session. The session came to an end with thought-provoking quotation by Mr Satyanarayanan “Only they live who live for others, the rest are dead alive”. The coordinator, Prof G.S. Dua, honoured the guest.

Mr Satyanarayanan was in the city to set up a local chapter for the National HRD Network. He expressed happiness that Mr Sanjeev Nagpal, a human resource consultant, had taken up the responsibility in this regard. Also present on the occasion were Mr H.S. Sra, Senior Manager Vardhman, Mr R.S. Rahi, Senior Manager of UPS, Mr Alok Srivastava, Senior Executive of Anshupathi Textiles, Mr K.S. Kaler, Manager ING Vysa, Mr O.C. Sharma, Amkryon Industries.

Two-day children’s festival concludes

Ludhiana, November 11
The two-day International Children’s Festival of Performing Arts-2003, being organised by Ryan International School, concluded at Guru Nanak Dev Bhavan here today.

Mr S.K. Sharma, Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, was the chief guest. A musical item ‘Hey dumbo!!!’ focussed on the importance of time management.

The morning session was abuzz with activities like inter-school dance competition in which students from seven schools from the city took part.

Students from 10 local schools also attended a dance workshop by foreign artists.

The students were thrilled to avail themselves of the opportunity to attend the workshop.

The function was held under the guidance of Dr A.F. Pinto, Founder Chairman, Ms Grace Pinto, Director, and Ms Anupama Sapra, Headmistress of the school. Mr Utkarsh Marwaha directed the show.

Retired govt teachers hold meeting

Ludhiana, November 11
The Punjab Government College Retired Teachers’ Welfare Association held its state-level meeting at Sahir Auditorium, SCD Government College, here today. More then 400 retired lecturers from government colleges all over Punjab attended the meeting. Dr Manmohan Singh, Secretary, Higher Education, Punjab, was the chief guest. He said the retired college teachers have a very important role to play in the society. He said they have to act as a guide for the common man and must strongly react on social and academic issues fearlessly. He urged them all to give suggestions to the politicians and bureaucrats

Prominent among those present were Dr Bhagat Singh, former Vice-Chancellor, Punjabi University, Dr Gursewak Singh, a former DPI and Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University, Dr Harkirat Singh, also former DPI. Others present included nearly 36 retired college principals who have served the government colleges all over the state.

Earlier, Mr Sarwan Singh, president of the association, welcomed the members. Principal B.K. Bhalla, secretary, talked about various activities of the association. Two retired teachers who had turned 80 were honoured. These included Dr Ujagar Singh and Ms Amar Malhotra.

The association president declared Dr Manmohan Singh as the honorary member of the association in view of his retirement due on December 31 this year. Mr M.S. Cheema, president of the local unit, and Dr S.D. Joshi, convener, organised the function.

Computer carnival at school continues

Ludhiana, November 11
The computer carnival at Sacred Heart Convent Senior Sec School, Sarabha Nagar, continued for the second day today.
The team of the host school won the cyberquiz. The team of MGN Public School, Kapurthala, were the runners-up. The hosts also won cyberquest. A KVM Ludhiana team were first runners-up while the hosts were also second runners-up and another KVM Ludhiana team bagged the special prize.

In cyberview (class VI to VIII) declamation contest, BCM Arya Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana, were the winners, the runners-up being DAV School, Ludhiana. In individual category Prerna from BCM was first, followed by Anupurna of GNPS, Ludhiana, Jyotsana of BCM.

In cyberview (class IX to XII) declamation contest, hosts were winners, runners-up being KVM Ludhiana. In individual category, Ruchi Sood from KVM Ludhiana was first, followed by Parneet Wander of host school and Amandeep of GGN Public School, Ludhiana, as joint second. The third prize went to Nidhi of USPC Jain Public School, Ludhiana.
