Docs adopt novel method to save 4-year-old
Our Correspondent

SAS Nagar, November 11
A four-year-old Nepalese child, who had a hole in his heart, has been given a fresh lease of life at Fortis Heart Institute and Multi Speciality Hospital here. Though heart problem is not uncommon in such a case, a new technique was adopted to save the child as he faced a different type of disorder.

Talking to The Tribune, Dr G.S. Kalra, Head of Cardiology and Senior Consultant, Interventional Cardiology, Fortis Heart Institute, said the patient, Subash, was suffering from patent ductus arterious (PDA). He said 2 per cent to 5 per cent children had congenital heart defects, but PDA was the most common among them. For many years the disorder was treated only through surgery and later a non-surgical method was deviced to treat it.

Talking about the non-surgical method Dr Kalra, who had treated about 1,000 such cases, said a tube was inserted through a vein of the leg that connected the heart and a device called amplatzer was introduced there. This device was made of nitinol (nickel titanium alloy), which could be compressed even up to 2 mm and could attain a particular shape. The shape and the size of the device were tailor-made according to the hole, but selecting the shape and size of the device was very important.

He said in the case of Subash he had to adopt a rare procedure as the vein of the leg that connected the heart was blocked and he had to insert the tube through a vein of the neck. He was reluctant initially as he had never treated such a patient and neither had he come across such a case reported in medical literature. Though medically it was different type of case, he was able to introduce the device which fitted like “a cork in a bottle”.

Dr Kalra said the routine type of PDA cases were being handled by a number of centres. In fact, he said, he had introduced the amplatzer device, which had been named after Dr Kurt Amplat, Director of Radiology in Minnesota, Minneaplois, USA, in about 30 centres across the country. The cost of the device was Rs 50,000 which was about three times lower than the cost in many European countries.

Asked why children suffered from such heart problems Dr Kalra said though there could be some genetic reasons, viral infections during first three months of pregnancy could also lead to such problems.

Mr Thum Bahadur, father of the child , said Subash was not keeping good health. He used to cry a lot and even did not have his food properly. He even used to have cough and fever. He was taken to doctors but after some time the family members were told that the child was suffering from a heart problem.

Two PSEB workers suspended
Our Correspondent

SAS Nagar, November 11
An Assistant Lineman and one of his team mates working under the local division of the Punjab State Electricity Board have been suspended by the authorities concerned.

It is learnt that Davinder Kumar, who was working as a regular team mate, and Shiv Murti, an Assistant Lineman, were suspended yesterday and the orders to this effect were issued by the Additional Superintending Engineer, Distribution, Special Division, Mr K.S. Sidhu.

The orders said the employees were suspended because they were allegedly indulging in corrupt practices and were also responsible for pilferage of the Board’s material. An inquiry in this regard had been conducted by an Assistant Executive Engineer of the Technical Division No 1.

According to the inquiry report, residents of Manana village had given in writing that a vehicle had broken low tension wires connected to the transformer in the area and the villagers had stopped the vehicle for causing damage. The PSEB employees concerned were also informed in this regard. The complainants had said three employees, including Davinder Kumar and Shiv Murti came to the spot and allegedly took Rs 2,800 from the vehicle owner to let him go. The employees had that time given an assurance to the villagers that they would install a new pole and lift the wires to a higher level. But this was not done.

The report had further pointed out that the villagers were not satisfied with the services of the employees as they failed to take immediate action during power failures and at times even allegedly asked for gratification for making the transformer functional.
