Demand for more thermal imagers Jammu, November 9 The hand-held thermal imagers, imported from Israel, have proved effective in tracking down the infiltrators not only on the LoC but in remote areas of the twin districts, according to a senior security official. He told this correspondent that recently a group of militants had managed to snap the barbed wire fence in the Mendhar area of Poonch and sneaked into the Indian territory. Their intrusion had gone unnoticed because the troops, guarding the border, had never imagined that the infiltrators could cut the barbed wire through which an electric current passes at night. The official said that the militants had scaled the 8-foot-high fence with a plastic ladder. He said the intrusion had been monitored by thermal imagers and once it was noted, the security forces swung into action and later eliminated about 15 infiltrators, who had walked deep into the Indian territory. He said that the plastic ladder had been recovered. The BSF and the Army authorities have conveyed to the Centre that there was urgent need to import more hand-held thermal imagers, which had to be installed not only on the LoC but in several forward areas for checking infiltration from across the LoC. |
