Woman beats youth to death over langar
SAS Nagar, November 8
In a horrifying incident that took place in the holy precincts of a gurdwara, a middle-aged woman in Mauli Baidwan village today beat a 22-year-old youth to death while he was doing sewa in the gurdwara.

PU questions its own concession

Panjab University has raised a question mark over a special concession made by the Syndicate for allowing admission to candidates placed under compartment of school boards, particularly Punjab School Education Board.

20-yr-old killed in mishap

A city youth, Amit Rajwanshi, a student of the Himalayan Institute of Medical Sciences, Dehra Dun, died in a road accident this morning.

Punjab canals in bad shape, says engineers’ body

The Institution of Engineers (India), a body of engineers from Punjab, Chandigarh and surrounding states, has expressed its concern about the lack of maintenance of hydel projects and canal system in Punjab. With the fall in budgetary support from the Centre and state governments, it felt, the Irrigation Departments were finding it hard to meet even day-to-day maintenance expenses of the canal systems.

INLD flouts apex court’s order on hoardings

PU to rethink on festival venue

Rowdyism at the Youth Festival yesterday will force Panjab University to rethink on the issue of choosing venue for the Zonal Youth Festivals from the forthcoming academic session. The ‘gidha’ and ‘bhangra’ competition witnessed a heavy disorder, exchange of chairs, breaking of furniture and a break in the session on the concluding day of Zone-B festival yesterday.

2 Punjab cops identified

Tarlochan Singh, whose son Kulwinder Singh was killed by the Punjab police in an alleged fake encounter case in 1989, yesterday identified two of the accused — Punjab police officials — involved in a local court. The hearing in the case was adjourned for November 27 for cross-examination.

UT Red Cross to hold health camps

The UT Red Cross will organise health camps in the rural and slum areas of the city. The first of the fortnightly camps will start on November 14 at Government Girls School, Sector 25, at 8:30 am. The camp will be free of cost for all residents.

Cycle track altered to suit encroachers

The much-hyped about scheme of the Chandigarh Administration to have cycle tracks along the major roads to ease traffic congestion has hit a roadblock in Sector 19, thanks to the encroachers who have illegal shops along the road dividing Sector 19 and 27, besides an unauthorised parking lot.

A sub-committee of the transport advisory council, Chandigarh Administration, yesterday suggested that operations of the Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) should be based on profitability for providing adequate services while also keeping in view its social obligation.
