Kutumb to host ‘Goal of Life’ soccer tourney
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, October 9
The Kutumb Foundation will organise the second edition of the Inter-NGO Football Tournament— Goal of Life Soccer with a Cause—at the Raghubir Singh Junior Modern School ground, Humayun Road, on October 12 (Sunday) from 11 am to 5 pm.

Sixteen NGOs will field their teams in the soccer competition while another 16 will put up their stalls to create awareness on their work on various issues of social relevance as well as to display their products. An on the spot drawing competition for children in the 9 to 17 years age group will also be held.

President of the Kutumb Foundation Kapil Pandey said former Indian cricket captain Kapil Dev will be the chief guest at the tournament. He said the first edition of the tournament was held in August 2002 at the St. Columba’s School ground, which was graced by the Indian football team, led by Baichung Bhutia and coach Stephan Constantine.

Mr Kapil Pandey said the teams would be divided into two pools of eight teams each. He said the title winners would be awarded the “Golden Goal”. The participants would be provided t-shirts, shorts and shoes.

Lakhani will sponsor the shoes while Knight Queen will sponsor the shorts. The refreshments will be sponsored by Brindavan Health Foods, the American Soyabean Association and Pepsi.

Unicef’s programme officer (child protection) Gerry Pinto, appreciating Kutumb Foundation’s commendable work among under-privileged children, said the ‘Goal of Life’ Soccer Tournament was a “very good initiative to bring opportunities of recreation and sports to street children who are generally deprived of these”.

Mr Pinto said it was encouraging to note that Kutumb “through this event is also mobilising a network of NGOs who are concerned with street children”. He commended Kutumb’s decision to involve children of public schools, which is “indeed a good effort as these children could also be exposed to the situation and conditions of street children who are considerably deprived of even the basic needs of their development”.

Mr Pinto said it would be very appropriate to coin the slogan that “All children have a right to good quality education”. He said it was the duty of every concerned citizen to ensure that “all children go to school and this could contribute to progressive reduction of child labour”.

Mr Kapil Pandey said Kutumb’s “most basic aim is to give the city’s street and slum children a day out in which to play and foster the spirit of positive competition, share their experiences with each other and generally have a day of pure unadulterated fun”.
