Sources said here this evening that Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh had sought a complete report from the Department of Education and the Hamirpur district administration about the controversy.

District administration officials remained busy during the day to prepare a detailed reply, giving the all sides of the issue.

The Deputy Commissioner, Mr Devesh Kumar and Lt-Col Mohinder Singh, Chairman-cum–Managing Director of the Sainik Welfare Board, also the acting Director of the Sainik Welfare Department, discussed the setting up of a polyclinic at Hamirpur during their meeting today. There were indications that the Chief Minister might discuss this issue with the Army authorities. The Chief Minister had assured the Army authorities that they would be given a suitable building at Hamirpur for the polyclinic.

The Chief Minister was likely to accept the recommendations of the district administration for bifurcating the old complex of the vidyalaya into two parts and to give one part to the Army authorities and another to the education board.

Stone pelting at funeral procession
Our Correspondent

Kangra, October 9
Tension gripped the Manji Ka Pul area falling under local police station today when women members of a family tried to stop the funeral procession of a villager of Baidi village.

A girl belonging to the family brandished a loaded gun and indulged in stone pelting on the mourners which caused injuries to two persons, the police said.

A top police official, Mr Santosh Patial, today said that Ranjeet Singh (45), a resident of Baidi village died of brain tumour today.

His body was being taken for cremation to the local cremation ground near Manji Ka Pul. On way to the cremation ground, the procession was stopped by members of a Naib Tehsildar’s family including his wife and two daughters.

Mr Patial said that they allegedly pelted stones from their house on the mourners and two of them got injured in the stone pelting.

Mr Patial said one of the daughters of the Naib Tehsildar, Neha then brandished a loaded licensed rifle and tried to open fire. But she was overpowered by some mourners, who snatched the rifle and ran away. Meanwhile, the police rushed to the spot when informed by family members of the Naib Tehsildar about the development.

He said that the body of Ranjeet Singh was then cremated in the presence of police staff. The police has registered a case against Neha under Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act and 307, IPC.

Another case was registered against those who snatched the rifle under Sections 323, 506 and 447, IPC.

He said no one had been arrested in the case. The controversy cropped up because the villagers claim that the cremation ground had been used for the past century where as the protesting family whose house was adjacent to the cremation ground, objected to its use.
