Delhiites urged to donate blood annually
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, October 2
Contrary to the perception that blood donations causes weakness in a person, health experts point out that blood donation can lead to a decrease in the chances of a person acquiring diseases.

The revelation came at a seminar organised by the Delhi Blood Donation Council and Apollo Hospital on the National Voluntary Blood Donation Day here yesterday.

Speaking on the occasion, the Delhi Health Minister, Dr A. K. Walia, pointed out that only 20 per cent of the blood collected in the city was voluntary donation. He appealed to the people to donate blood at least once a year and sought to quell the misconception that it led to weakness.

Dr Walia said that Delhi needed about 325,000 units of blood annually of which 80 per cent was collected in return for blood required and 20 per cent came as voluntary donation. He called upon the NGOs and voluntary organisations to organise blood donation camps on social and religious occasions so that maximum blood could be collected.

The Minister added that contrary to popular perception that donating blood leads to physical weakness, giving blood in fact led to substantial decrease in the chances of a person acquiring various diseases.

Dr Walia also pointed out that the regional blood donation centres at GTB Hospital, Lok Nayak Jaya Prakash Narayan Hospital and Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital had been computerised and the remaining five at other hospitals would soon be connected to the network so that information about availability of blood was accessible on-line.
