Young Star annex Friendship Trophy New Delhi, October 2 Young Star captain M Ravi won the toss and elected to bat. With Ravi and Ganesh coming up with flashy knocks, the Chennai team posted a total of 174 for 5 in 35 overs. Keshav Puram, led by all-rounder Bhola Shankar, put the visitors on the backfoot when Bhola Shankar himself caused the maximum damage, claiming three wickets at the cost of just 20 runs in seven over and Ashwani Kumar took 2 for 34. But the Keshav Puram batsmen could not capitalise on Bhola Shankar’s deadly bowling spell as they failed to cope up with the visitors’ penetrative bowling display, and crashed out for 110 for 9 in 35 overs. Former India junior player Zeeshan Mohammad gave away the prizes. Top players for chess tourney New Delhi, October 2 Grand Master Koneru Humpy, Commonwealth champion Dibyendu Barua, Surys Shekhr Ganguly, Sergei Ovsejevitsch of Ukraine and Niaz Murshed of Bangladesh, grandmasters S. Vijayalakshmi, Aartjie Ramaswamy and Nisha Mohota are some of the big names competing for the title and a cash prize of Rs 1,00,00. The tournament carries a total cash prize of Rs 3,00,000. This is the first time the reconstituted Delhi Chess Association is organising such a major international tournament. |
Roopam Vats shines in CBSE tourney Panipat, October 2 Panipat has pride to honour Roopam Vats of class X of DAV Thermal Colony Public School, who bagged first gold medal in the Ring Race II event of under-19 years of girls’ 1500 meter for the school on the very first day. Athletes from Delhi, Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Chandigarh and Haryana had participated in the four-day tournaments, which concluded today. While concluding the programme and announcing the final tally, the Vice-Chairman of DAV School Management, Mr Ram Sanehi Arya, congratulated the students of all the five competing states participating in the four-day event and also thanked the parents who came from even Jammu and Kashmir area. These types of events are healthy events and schools should take part actively irrespective of place and area, he said. The students of DAV Thermal Colony, Panipat, achieved good result only due to their hard work and regular practice, he added. Announcing the final tally of the medals, the Vice-Chairman announced that the DAV Public School Thermal Colony, Panipat, bagged 13 medals, out of which seven were gold and six silver. Second position was attained by Amity International Sckhool, Delhi, which bagged six medals – three gold and silver each. The third in the race was KB DAV Chandigarh, which bagged two gold, three silver and one bronze. The Hansraj Public School, Delhi, bagged three gold and two bronze and secured fourth position.

MCD to take up streetlights’ issue with LG New Delhi The Municipal Commissioner, Mr Rakesh Mehta, said that the DISCOM charged crores of rupees as electricity bills for streetlights but 40 per cent of the total streetlights in the Capital were non-functional. The issue was taken up with the higher authorities of the power distribution company but they did not believe the survey report of the Police Control Room (PCR) of the city police. Recently the PCR surveyed the Capital’s streetlights and submitted the survey report to the department concerned of the NCT Government of Delhi which claimed a large number of the streetlights in the Capital were non-functional.
