MC staff demolish illegal structures
Ludhiana, October 2
Close on the heels of inspection by the Chief Vigilance Officer of the Local Government Department, Mr A.K. Kansal, of some commercial complexes constructed in violation of the building bylaws and other unlawful structures in the city on Tuesday, a team, headed by the Municipal Town Planner (MTP), Mr P.K. Garg, razed a substantial portion of a commercial building in Patel Nagar on Old DMC Road late last evening.

Seminar on drug abuse marks Gandhi Jayanti
Amloh, October 2
The Punjab Health Systems Corporation celebrated Gandhi Jayanti at Maghi Memorial Girls College here on today. A seminar on the drug menace was organised and tributes were paid to Mahatma Gandhi and late Prime Minister Lal Bahadar Shastri on the occasion.

Textile service centre for city soon

The Apparel Exporters Association of India (Appeal) has signed an MoU with the Northern India Textile Research Association (NITRA) for training in human resource development, project consultancy, testing and research and development for textile industry by setting up a textile service centre in the city.

Married woman gang-raped
Ludhiana, October 2
A resident of Shimlapuri was gang-raped by three persons late last night. According to sources, the 29-year-old was alone at her house when one of the accused called her out and told her that her husband had met with an accident and hospitalised. He told her that he had been asked by him to inform and bring her to the hospital.

Two killed in mishaps
Ludhiana, October 2
Motorcyclist Pinka Kumar, a resident of Jugiana village, was killed on the spot in an accident on the GT Road on Wednesday. The police has registered a case on the statement of his father, Mr Rajeshwar Parshad.

PAU finalises model garden plot for Rashtrapati Bhavan
Ludhiana, October 2
Punjab Agricultural University has finalised a plot for laying the model garden at Rashtrapati Bhavan and the plantation of fruit saplings will start within this month. The garden has been planned with a view that fruits are available round the year. The selection of fruit trees would be done accordingly, said the Vice-Chancellor, Dr K.S. Aulakh.

Two-day seminar on Punjabi culture from Oct 7
Ludhiana, October 2
The PAU will organise a two-day seminar on the Punjabi culture on October 7 and 8. Dr S.S. Gill, Additional Director of Extension Education, Centre for Communication, Languages and Culture, said the seminar was being organised with the financial assistance of the Minister for Animal Husbandry, Dairy Development, Fisheries, Sports and Youth Services, Mr Jagmohan Singh Kang, out of his discretionary funds.

To honour the toppers of CBSE and various competitive examinations, the staff and management of Kundan Vidya Mandir organised a get-together here yesterday.
Manish Aggarwal, who had stood first in the entrance test for the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research University, Hyderabad, and even topped the school in commerce stream with 92.2 per cent marks, was honoured with silver salvers, citation and a special prize.

Over 50 tiny tots of Shanti Niketan Adarsh Vidyalaya, Benjamin road, participated in a fancy dress show held here today. Children from pre-nursery to Class II participated in the contest. They came on the stage dressed up as various characters of Ramayana and Mahabharta.

Kalpana Chawla memorial tourney ends
Ludhiana, October 2
The first Kalpana Chawla Memorial Tournament held by the Chahal Sports and Welfare Club concluded at Uchi Daud village near Malaudh recently. The three-day tournament, which witnessed keen contests in kabaddi and volleyball for men, was a big draw, according to Mr Harvinder Singh Chahal, president of the club.
