Scrub typhus alert sounded

Jammu, October 2
A health alert has been sounded in Jammu and Kashmir against scrub typhus following its outbreak in neighbouring Himachal Pradesh, a senior Health Department official said today.

“Scrub typhus is a serious disease and is caused by an infected larval mite. The disease is transmitted to man through the bite of an infected mite from rats or mice,” the Deputy Medical Superintendent, Government Medical College, Mr Yash Pal Sharma, said here.

“We have sounded an alert here after confirmed cases of scrub typhus were reported from bordering Solan district in Himachal Pradesh recently,” he said.

“Although no scrub typhus case has been detected here there was a possibility of the disease spreading from the neighbouring state,” Dr Sharma said.

The symptoms include acute chills and fever, headache, malaise, exhaustion, enlargement of the lymph glands and rashes on the fifth day of illness. — PTI

J&K remembers Gandhiji after 28 years
Tribune News Service

Jammu, October 2
It was after 28 years that the father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, was officially remembered by the Jammu and Kashmir Government on his 134th birth anniversary by organising various functions.

It is perhaps after 1975 that the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi has been celebrated on a high scale, particularly in the Kashmir valley. Remembering the national leaders was hardly on the agenda of the government during the regime of the National Conference.

The government machinery was on its toes throughout the day as the PDP-Congress coalition government of Mufti Sayeed made it a point to organise a string of functions to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi.

The Mufti inaugurated video-conferencing among Srinagar, Jammu, Leh and various other remote areas to improve the efficiency in governance. With this, J&K has become the second state after Andhra Pradesh in the country to introduce e-governance.

In another function, while inaugurating the PWD fortnight, the Mufti urged the people to involve themselves in the upkeep of roads which were necessary for the development of the state. He also laid the foundation of a modern complex in Srinagar.

The minister of state, Mr Raman Mattoo, announced an additional discount of 5 per cent on khadi products to mark the occasion. so far, the discount was 30 per cent during the anniversary celebrations.

Since becoming Chief Minister, the Mufti has taken steps discreetly to make the people of the state remember that they were a part and parcel of India.

They said with this facility easy connectivity had been established with the district administration by cutting long travel, time and cost besides bringing about efficiency.

Leh council seeks more funds

Leh, October 2
The Leh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) has said that the funds being allocated for the development of this cold desert region are inadequate and threatened to launch an agitation for Union Territory (UT) status if its demands are not met.

“We are still being treated as one of the 14 districts of the state as far as the allocation of funds is concerned,” LAHDC Chief Executive Councillor (CEC) Thupstan Tswang said.

However, he lauded the coalition government in the state for restoring full powers to the council.

Mr Tswang said the people of Ladakh, particularly Leh, were not satisfied with the funds being provided for development work.

“Our plan allocation is less than that of Badgam district though our area is much more than the total area of all 13 districts of the state,” he lamented and added the people of Ladakh had been deprived of their rights since Independence.

“It was because of this reason that the people revolted against the state and demanded UT status,” the CEC said, adding “we have not yet given up this demand despite the LAHDC being given full powers by the present government.” — UNI
