Preventive aspects of trauma stressed
Our Correspondent

New Delhi, September 29
A two-day international conference on critical care of trauma management, organised by the Department of Anaesthesiology and the Department of Critical Care of Ganga Ram Hospital, concluded with the address of Union Labour Minister Sahib Singh Verma at India Habitat Centre today.

He said critical care is vital to the management of patients with severe trauma and the new millennium will bring in fresh challenges and opportunities. Dr S. K. Sama, chairman—Board of Management, Ganga Ram Hospital, said infection and sepsis continue to be a major cause of death in severely injured trauma patients. Patients in the critical care units are prone to complications and require a host of supportive services..

The basic critical care issues relevant to the trauma care include prolonged nutritional support, pain control and management of lung injuries, and they must be taken care of.

Dr B.K. Rao, organising secretary of the conference said, “We should focus on the preventive aspects of trauma. Providing adequate resuscitation and critical care can prevent major proportion of trauma deaths. This involves teaching and training, both of the emergency doctors and para-medical staff.

The patients suffering fatal injuries should be attended to first. They should be given immediate resuscitation without consideration of their medico-legal or financial status. Hospitals should have enough equipment to carry out the resuscitation. He said in India out of every six accident victims, one dies.

The figure for the USA is one out of 201. This year alone, Delhi has witnessed over 6,117 accidents up to September 15, of which 1,176 were fatal.
