Mufti invites Jammu residents to
valley Jammu, September 29 Addressing a series of public functions in the winter capital during the past two days, the Chief Minister claimed that the Kashmir valley was on its way to normalcy and invited people from Jammu to make the valley their second home. He said the government will allot land to Jammu residents who wished to construct their houses in the valley. Mufti announced that the government had decided to give several incentives, including jobs on a preferential basis, to Kashmir migrants who agreed to return to the valley. He said Hindus who had stayed back and faced the situation in the valley, too, would be entitled government incentives, which included jobs. He said notwithstanding incidents of militancy-related violence, the peoples’ yearning for peace had enabled the government to organise 100 conferences and seminars and receive 440 MPs who had decided to hold meetings of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee in Kashmir the coming summer. The Chief Minister said dignitaries who had come to Kashmir to attend conferences had visited various places in the valley without police escort. He said “these very dignitaries had told me that the situation was altogether different from what they had read in newspapers and were told about before leaving for Srinagar”. He said his government was committed to carrying in hand a series of development projects, including the much-needed power generating units, in all three regions. “We have launched a drive against corruption and misuse of religious institutions and those connected with health care”. He said taking over of the Medical Institute at Soura in Srinagar and the Muslim Auqaf Trust by ridding them of a group of persons had received wide support from people. |

Pervez Jammu, September 29 Addressing a convention of the PDP workers and leaders here today, the Chief Minister said: “People in Jammu and Kashmir are dismayed at the way General Musharraf raised the Kashmir issue in the UN General Assembly.” He said “the attitude of the Pakistani President was not proper for building bridges between India and
Pakistan.” Raising his voice, the Mufti said: “I want the Pakistani President to give books and not guns in the hands of the Kashmiri youths.” He said: “Violence had affected lives of our people. The India-Pakistan conflict has destabilised peace in Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in large-scale suffering of the masses.” The Chief Minister suggested to General Musharraf to respond to the peace initiative of Prime Minister, Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee.” “General Musharraf’s utterances and that too at the international level were against promotion of friendly relations with India,” he said. The Mufti said: “ Several Indian delegations that had visited Pakistan in recent weeks had found that people in Pakistan were keen on promoting peace and good neighbourly relations with India. General Musharraf should feel the pulse of the people in Pakistan and avoid belligerent postures which were bound to vitiate peace in the subcontinent.” |
120 Bangladeshis held near border Jammu, September 29 After preliminary questioning, they will be handed over to the police for further investigation. This is the largest group of Bangladeshis which has been taken into custody while trying to cross over the Pakistan in the recent past, the sources said, adding that, earlier groups of only five to 10 used to attempt crossing to the other side of the border. These Bangladeshis are usually lured by agents on a false promise of providing them jobs in construction works and are brought to Jammu by train and then asked to cross over the border, they said. —
