Admn to hand over 3 sectors to MC
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 13
Three newly developed sectors in the city are being transferred to the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh. The developed sectors — Sectors 48, 49 and 61 — are located along the border with SAS Nagar.

This is being done despite the fact that the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh has been crying for more funds to maintain sectors under its jurisdiction.

A number of meetings between the officers of the administration, housing board and corporation have been held to work out the modalities before the transfer.

Once the new sectors developed by the Chandigarh Housing Board under Phase III of the integrated development plan were handed over to the corporation, the maintenance and administrative control would be the responsibility of the corporation.

As per the provisions of the Punjab Municipal Act as applicable to the Chandigarh, councillors would have to be elected from the new areas.

A senior officer of the engineering wing of the corporation said several rounds of discussion had already been held on the subject.

Transfer of new areas involves a lot of exercise like status of the roads, length of the roads and other basic amenities.

It is mandatory under the Municipal Act to transfer the developed areas to a civic body.

When these sectors were to be developed, the administration had vouched to take care for the first five years.

The period of five years elapses in 2003 for Sectors 48 and 49 and for Sector 61 the period ended in 2002.
