Surgeon invited to Malaysia
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, September 11
Dr Kuldip Singh, a pioneer in laparoscopic surgery in north India, has been invited as a guest faculty in the Sixth Asia Pacific Congress of Endoscopic Surgery beginning from tomorrow in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

He will be delivering guest lectures in symposia on “Laparoscopic gall bladder surgery in acute and gangrenous gall bladder” and “How to avoid bile duct injuries during difficult gall bladder surgery”. He will also be chairing the scientific session on new technologies and development of laparoscopic surgery in Asia. This is an honour for a surgeon from North India to have been invited as a faculty in the international meeting. Earlier, in June 2003 his paper on “difficult gall bladder surgery-technical aspects” was nominated among the best 10 papers in the 11th European Congress of Endoscopic Surgery held in Glasgow, Britain.

Talking to TNS before flying to Malaysia, he said in the beginning of laparoscopic surgery in 1990, difficult cases of gall bladder stone disease like infections, pus in the gall bladder, cirrhosis of the liver, pregnancy with gall stones and some other difficult problems were not recommended for laparoscopic surgery.

This was mainly because of new technique and surgeons were not experienced in this technology. There were lot of complications of bile duct injuries during surgery and more and more cases were converted to open surgery because of the difficulty in dealing such cases. In the past few years’ surgeons gaining expertise in this technology had succeeded in dealing all difficult gallbladder stone cases by laparoscopic method at present.

Basketball courts get floodlights
Our Sports Reporter

Chandigarh, September 11
Floodlights at basketball courts in the Sports Training Centre of the Sports Authority of India, Sector 18, have been made functional. Two volleyball courts at the centre earlier had the facility.

Ms Ritu Pathik, Assistant Director, Sports Authority of India, said it was during the inauguration ceremony of floodlights of the volleyball courts few months back that the local MP, Mr Pawan Kumar Bansal, had promised to provide money from his MP’s Local Area Development Fund for floodlights at the basketball courts. Ms Pathik said the trainees used to face difficulty during winter, since the days were short. Now with proper lighting of the courts they could practice for more hours and get adapted to playing under floodlights. She felt grateful to Mr Bansal for showing concern towards improving sports infrastructure in the centre. However, formal inauguration of the floodlights would be done shortly, she said.

Meanwhile, on the second day of the ongoing selection trials being held for the admission to four disciplines — athletics, hockey, volleyball and basketball — in the STC today, skill tests were held. Ms Pathik said in hockey, old trainees played a match with prospective trainees. The participants also played exhibition matches in volleyball and basketball. She said the response had been encouraging and girls had come from far off places.

Tomorrow the personal interviews of the candidates would be held and the names of those recommended would be sent to the Corporate Office of the Sports Authority of India for final approval.
