Ten teams for DSA Super League

New Delhi, September 7
Ten top teams, including defending champions Indian Air Force (New Delhi) and runners-up Hindustan Club, will battle it out for top honours in the Delhi Soccer Association (DSA) Senior Division Football League Championship, starting at the Ambedkar Stadium on Monday.

DSA secretary Narinder Kumar Bhatia said the ten teams have been divided into two groups of five teams each. Group A comprises Hindustan, Shastri, Raisina Sporting Union, Tarun Sangha and Indian National while Group B consists of Indian Air Force (New Delhi), Shahdara, City Club, Simla Youngs and New Delhi Heroes. He said the matches will be played under gates and the tickets have been priced at Rs 5 each.

Mr Bhatia said Shastri Club will take on Indian National in the opening match at 2.30 pm followed by a match between Raisina Sporting and Tarun Sangha at 4.30 pm. He said the tournament will be sponsored by SAIL, State Bank of India, ONGC and Cosco. The top ten teams of the 16-team preliminary league, which concluded on Saturday, have qualified for the Super League. The bottom teams of Group A and B, Delhi Police and Buddisht Blue Stars respectively, will be relegated to the A Division from next season. Mr Bhatia and DSA president Nawabuddin Zaheer said at a press meet that the winners of the championship will be given a cash prize of Rs 10,000 while the runners-up will be awarded Rs 7,500. They said the losing semi-finalists will be given Rs 2,500 each. The winners of the A and B Division Championships will also be awarded Rs 2,500 each.

Mr Bhatia said Youngmen and Indian Air Force (Palam) from A Division and Paschim Heroes and Rohini from B Division have been promoted to the Senior and A Division respectively while Youngsters and Cosmos have been relegated to the B Division. The DSA will also award cash prizes of Rs 2,500 each to the four best players of the Super League.

100 families take part in car rally

The 3rd Family Car Rally was held in Delhi on Sunday. More than 100 families participated in this fun-filled unique motor sport event, based on the international pattern of “Time-Distance & Speed”.

The rally was flagged off by Union Sports Minister Vikram Verma from Hotel Ashok at 10.30 am.

The family car rally culminated at Tivoli Gardens near Mehrauli at around 3 pm.

It passed through India Gate, Ritz Road, R K Puram, Moolchand, Greater Kailash and Qutab Institutional Area, covering the total distance of around 70 km before it culminated at Tivoli Gardens.

It passed over the public roads and highways, observing all traffic rules and regulations maintaining an average speed within the specified limit.

The rally which has become an annual affair for Delhiites, was organised by Rashi Entertainment as a part of its 4th anniversary celebrations in association with Women’s Era.

In this family car rally, organised on International Time, Distance & Speed (TDS) pattern, a Guiding Route Map (GRM) was given to each participant with a Tulip Card mentioning the speed to be maintained, the time to be followed and the distance to be covered by the rallyists.

Control sections and check points were set up across the route, where the competitors had to get their time cards stamped. The distance between the check point and the next was to be covered within the specified time.

Yogesh Sharma hits century

A strokeful century by Yogesh Sharma and deadly bowling by Thanesh Kaushik (4 for 43) enabled Ramakant Achrekar Cricket Foundation defeat M M Public School by 27 runs in the Jainti Devi Under-19 Cricket Series played at the DDA Sports Complex, Paschim Vihar. Yogesh Sharma was presented the man of the match award.

Scores: Ramakant Achrekar Cricket Foundation: 275 in 57 overs (Yogesh Sharma 114, Dinesh Bindal 52) M M Public School: 248 off 55 overs (Nikhil 52, Upmanyu 42)

Ravindra, Vikaspuri share points

Ravindra School and Govt. School, Vikaspuri shared points as their league match in the Ramjas Inter-School U-17 Cricket Tournament was washed out due to heavy rains.

Jaladh, Pawan shine

A dashing batting display by Jaladh Dua (91 n o, 8x4, 5x6) and deadly bowling by Pawan Chouhan (3 for 11) helped DAV School, Shalimar Bagh beat Ramjas School No 5 by 208 runs in a league match of the second Ramjas Inter-School Under-17 Cricket Tournament at the Ramjas Sports Complex ground. Jaladh was named the man of the match.

Scores: DAV: 237 for 7 in 35 overs (Jaladh Dua 19 n o, Sahil Chaugh 27, Tarun Sharma 25, Abhishek Sakuja 25)

Ramjas No 5: 29 all out in 11.2 overs.

Manoj hits hattrick in Stance’s big victory

Manoj scored four goals in a row to record a brilliant hattrick as Stance Club trounced Delhi Youth 8-0 in the PNB Delhi State Hockey League for Clubs at the Shivaji Stadium on Sunday.

Raj Kumar opened the account in the 13th minute, and then Manoj took over the scoring job, hitting home the second and third goals in the 17th and 24th minutes to give the winners a comfortable 3-0 lead at half time. Manoj maintained his fine form on resumption too, scoring the fourth and fifth goals while Rajinder knocked in the sixth goal. Sopi scored two goals in the span of six minutes to complete the tally.

Delhi Sports whipped Khalsa Whites 9-0, after leading by 4-0 at half time. Gajinder opened the flood-gate in the eighth minute, and then added the seventh and ninth goals too, while Hitender and Niraj Yadav scored the second and third goals respectively. Sanjeev accounted for the fourth, fifth and sixth goals to record a hattrick while Joga Singh came up with the eighth goal.

Rajput Club beat Sonnet 3-1. All the goals came in the second half. Virender struck home the first and third goals while Rajesh accounted for the third goal of Rajput Club.

Rajvinder pulled off a consolation goal for Sonnet. The next matches of the league will be played on September 13 (Saturday).

CRPF clinch overall championship trophy

Amar Muralidharan provided the icing on the cake for the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) when he lifted the 200m butterfly gold on the concluding day of the 52nd All-India Police Aquatic and Cross Country Meet at the Talkatora swimming pool. Deepak Kumar of CRPF lifted the gold in the 400m medley while Elvis Ali Hazarika of the force won the 50m free style gold.

CRFP clinched the overall championship trophy, which was presented to them by Deputy Prime Minister L. K. Advani, who was the chief guest on the concluding day.

CRPF annexed the 4km cross country event while BSF ran away with the 12km cross country championship. CRPF also bagged the high board and spring board diving titles. Inspector Deepak Kumar Singh of CRPF was adjudged the best swimmer while Punjab Police cantered away with the championship trophy in aquatics. Director of the Intelligence Bureau K P Singh declared the championship closed. And also present were CRPF director-general S. C. Chaube and organising secretary O. P. Singh.

Keen competition in Rajiv Gandhi Swim Meet

Bablu, Bunty, Gopal, Dinesh, Suresh Kumar and Shubhadra emerged winners in the Rajiv Gandhi Swimming Meet, organised by the Yamuna Youth Centre at Yamuna River on Sunday.

The meet was inaugurated by former Speaker of the Delhi Vidhan Sabha and now president of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee Ch. Prem Singh.

Bablu swam to the first position in the seven-mile race with Samar Mazumdar and Ravi Shankar following him in the second and third position.

In the two-mile race for girls, Subhadra, Chanchal and Chandni took the first three places, in that order.

In the five-mile section, Bunty stood first, followed by Satyanarayan and Amar Thind. In the three-mile section, Gopal emerged first, while Aswani and Gauri Shankar finished second and third, respectively.

In the two-mile and one-mile races, Dinesh, Neeraj and Sumeet and Suresh, Nitin and Sunny claimed the first three positions, respectively. Delhi Urban Development Minister Dr A K Walia gave away the prizes. The winners were awarded cash prizes ranging from Rs 2100 to Rs 101.
