Conference discusses eating disorders

Chandigarh, September 7
A conference on “Women’s Health and Nutrition” was organised by the Department of Dietetics and Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Government Medical College and Hospital, at the PGI, here today. It was inaugurated by Mr R.S. Gujral, Secretary, Medical Education and Research, UT.

The theme of the conference assumes significance in the wake of the fact that the woman is the pivot around whom revolves the health of a family, the community and the nation.

Talking about nutritional needs and concerns of adolescents, Dr Sushma Kashyap, Reader, Department of Food and Nutrition, Lady Irwin College, New Delhi, emphasised that both undernutrition and overnutrition among adolescents were subjects of concern. She said healthy eating was the cornerstone in prevention of conditions like obesity, CVD, diabetes, hypertension, dental caries, cancer and anaemia.

Dr S.C. Saha, Assistant Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, PGI, discussed eating disorders — anorexia nervosa. and bulmia nervosa. Dr Alka Sehgal, Senior Lecturer, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, GMCH, said all adolescent girls should be made aware of the risk of pregnancy, knowledge of safe periods, use of contraceptives, sexually transmitted diseases and safety measures.

Others who spoke were Dr Sarla Malhotra, Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, PGI, Dr Raj Bahadur, Prof and Head, Department of Orthopaedics, GMCH, Dr Nirja Chawla, Secretary, Indian Menopause Society, Chandigarh. Dr Sarla Gopalan, Prof and Head, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, PGI, Prof Kala Vasistha from the PGI and Prof S.K. Mann from Punjab Agriculture University, Ludhiana, were among those who presided various sessions.

A panel discussion on “Health and Nutrition during Pregnancy and Lactation” moderated by Dr Poonam Goel cleared myths among women belonging to all socio-economic groups. A brain-storming food nutrition quiz contest was conducted by Chief Dietician Manju Mathur, GMCH, in which postgraduate students from Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Patiala and Yamunanagar provided intellectual stimulation.

Mr R.P. Batta, former Consultant, Dietetics, PGI and GMCH, was honoured with the “Lifetime Achievement Award.”

On the second day of the CBSE North Zone Judo Championship currently under way at IS Dev Samaj Senior Secondary School, Sector 21, the Mayor, Mr Subhash Chawla, awarded medals to the winners here today.

PEC enter cricket semifinal

A century partnership of 67 runs between captain Rajesh Arora (62 not out) and Satish Chaudhary (59 runs) enabled PEC Employees Cricket Association beat New India Assurance Company by 73 runs to enter the semifinal of the United India Insurance Cup Cricket Tournament at PEC Cricket ground here today.

Electing to batting first, the PEC team scored 159 for 3 in allotted 25 overs with main scorers being Rajesh Arora (62 not out), Satish Chaudhary (59 runs) and Vaneet Chawla (37 runs). Chasing the target, New India Assurance team were bundled out for 86 runs. PEC bowlers Tejinder Paul and Surinder Junior claimed three wickets each.

Brief scores: PEC-XI: 159 for 3 in 25 overs (Rajesh Arora 62 not out, Satish Chaudhary 59; S.P. Sharma 3 for 31). New India Assurance-XI: 86 all out (P.V. Bhanot 32, Anil Chawla 27, Tejinder 3 for 9, Surinder Junior 3 for 14, Rajinder 2 for 2, Leh Raj 2 for 11).

In the second quarter-final, HSIDC Panchkula beat Nestle India Limited, Chandigarh, by a narrow margin of three runs to enter the semifinal. Brief scores: HSIDC: 81 all out in 19.2 overs (Neeraj Tyagi 30, Dhavinder Gosain 22, Rohit Saini 5 for 10, Arpinder Bedi 3 for 17, Rajiv 2 for 10). Nestle India: 78 all out (Arpinder Bedi 28, Sandeep Sandhu 32, Dilbag Dahiya 3 for 14, Dharinder Gosain 3 for 14, Sanjeev Kumar 2 for 14, Narinder Sharma 2 for 14).

MCA win

In a group B match of the second Satluj League Cricket Tournament (u-14) played at Satluj Public School, Panchkula, Mohali Cricket Association beat Krishna XI, Panchkula, by 79 runs. Mohali Cricket Association won the toss and elected to bat. They made 159 for 9 in 25 overs. Jaskaran Singh and Inder Singh scored 37 and 29 runs, respectively. Krishna-XI’s Mohit took five wickets for 27 runs and was supported by Krishna who took 3 wickets for 12 runs.

In reply, Krishna-XI were bundled out for 80 runs. Inder Singh took 4 wickets for 14 runs. Only Nishant and Mohit crossed double figures by making 19 and 17 runs.

Brief score: MCA 159 for 9 in 25 overs (Jaskaran Singh 37, Inder Singh 29, Rahul 16, Mohit Kumar 5 for 27, Krishna 3 for 12).

Krishna-XI: 80 all out in 19 overs (Nishant 19; Inder Singh 4 for 14 and Rahul 2 for 10).

Boxing team

The following boxers will represent Chandigarh in the 50th National Boxing Championship to be held at Bangalore from September 9: Dharminder, Prem Rawat, Sandeep Yadav, Dharam Singh, Anand, Ram, Ram Charan, Ajay Yadav, Vijay Chauhan, V. Gaurav, Arihant Kumar and Narpreet Singh. Mr Harsh Kumar and Shiv Singh will accompany the team as manger and coach, respectively.

Best shooter

Harmandeep Sidhu of Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, and Roopmeet Mann of St Stephens School, Sector 45, were declared best shooters in boys and girls categories, respectively. Harmandeep Sidhu shot 578/600 in air rifle (ISSF) junior men and Roopmeet Mann scored 380/400 in air rifle (ISSF) in women categories.
