The Kendriya Punjabi Lekhak Sabha has urged the government to strictly enforce the use of Punjabi in all government offices, besides making necessary amendments to the State Language Act. In addition to this, the sabha demanded conferring Shiromani awards on writers and redressing other demands of the sabha.

Although the Pradesh Beopar Mandal and other trade and industry associations have called for the boycott of exim forms, panic stricken traders and industrialists made a beeline at the Excise and Taxation office in the Mini-Secretariat, leading to long queues.

The steel prices have started falling here today, thanks to the pressure built-up by small scale manufacturers on the Centre. The steel prices have fallen by Rs 2,000 or Rs 3,000 per tonne.

IndusInd-UTI bank tie-up on ATM service

The IndusInd and UTI Bank have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for mutual sharing of Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) in India. The agreement was signed by Mr Bhaskar Ghose, Managing Director, IndusInd Bank Ltd, and Dr P.J. Nayak, Chairman and Managing Director of UTI Bank, in Mumbai on Friday last. 

LIC celebrates 47th anniversary

The Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) today launched new citizen charter and Jeevan Shree-1 plan to mark the 47th anniversary. The policy was launched here by the Senior Divisional Manager, Mr P.K. “The TP Jain College of Education at Bhookhri Kalan, near here, will provide free education to poor students,” said Mr Sunil Bakshi, in charge of the college. From this session the college is starting postgraduate classes in political science.

A fast-track court has sentenced Jarnail Singh of Burre village to six years’ rigorous imprisonment for causing death of his wife, Balbir Kaur, in October 1997, by strangulation when she refused to serve him hot meals.

‘Love Letters’ coming to city on Sept 12
Ludhiana, September 1
The Durga Das Foundation, in association with Spice Telecom and The Tribune group of publications, will bring to the city a theatrical presentation from the stable of the talented Mumbai-based Rahul da Cunha, “Love Letters” on September 12 at Guru Nanak Dev Hall. Starring Rajit Kapoor and Shernaz Patel, the play traces the trials and tribulations in the lives of both, spanning over five decades.
