New Public School girls win basketball title

New Public School, Sector 18, clinched the girls basketball title in the Fourth Pandit Mohan Lal Memorial Basketball Tournament that concluded at SD Public School, Sector 32, here today.
In the boys’ section, the final between PML SD Public School and Shivalik Public School was abandoned due to rain. They were declared joint winners.

In the girls’ final, New Public School, Sector 18, defeated IS Dev Samaj Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 21, 48-25. Gurjeet with 16 points and Pinki with 12 points were the main scorers for the winners, while Rekha with seven points and Prabhjot with six points were the main scorers for the losers.

A cash prize of Rs 4,100 each to the boys’ team of PML SD Public School and Shivalik Public School was given. The girls’ team of New Public School, Sector 18, got Rs 5,100 while the runners-up team of IS Dev Samaj School, got Rs 3,100.

Weightlifting meet: The Air Force Weightlifting Championship will be held at 3 BRD, Air Force, Chandigarh, from September 2 to 5. Eight teams will take part in it. The meet will be inaugurated by Air Vice-Marshal GP D’Souza on September 2 at 5 pm. The events will be held in below 56 kg, 62 kg, 69 kg, 77 kg, 85 kg, 94 kg, 105 kg and above 105 kg categories. The Air Force team for the Services Weightlifting Meet will also be selected during the championship.

Soccer meet: Government High School, Sector 11, and Sacred Heart Senior Secondary school, Sector 26, scored easy wins over their respective rivals Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 22, 3-0, and Shivalik Public School, Sector 41, 4-0, respectively, in the third Chandigarh Junior Girls Football Championship (under-19) that began here on Saturday at the football stadium in Sector 17.

In the GHS-11 and GMSSS-22 tie, the first goal was scored by Gulab in fourth minute, second by Manju in the 14th minute, while the third goal was scored by Neeta in the 32nd minute.

In the match played between Sacred Heart School and SPS-41, Shikha scored the first goal in the 10th minute, second by Ashpreet in the 12th minute, third by Aditi in the 23rd minute and the fourth goal was again scored by Aditi in the 53rd minute.

Gymnastics: Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 10, bagged the overall gymnastics under-14-boys team championship in the UT Inter-School Boys Gymnastics Meet that concluded here recently. Dhan Bahadur of the school also was adjudged the all-round best gymnast.

He won seven gold medals in various events. Hargun and Subhash won four silver and three bronze medals, respectively. In the junior section, Govind Bahadur of the same school won one gold medal and six silver medals in different events. The boys were trained by SAI coach Rajinder Sharma.

8 more cricket centres proposed

The Administration will develop cricket centres at eight other places in the city. A high-level team of the Administration led by the Adviser to the UT Administrator, Mr Virendra Singh presented a blue print of its plan to a team of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

The BCCI team comprised the Secretary of the Punjab Cricket Association Mr M.P. Pandove and the Secretary of the Haryana Cricket Association, Mr Ranbir Singh.

The Administration while presenting its cases made out that the ground requires rollers for maintenance of the pitches, sight screens and pitch covers. The new cricket centres suggested by the Administration include one at Punjab Engineering College Sector 12 , DAV College Sector 10 and model schools around the city. The Administration had told the BCCI committee that it wanted to develop turf pitches in these grounds.

The Administration also made Director Information Technology, Mr Vivek Atray as nodal officer up would to be in touch with the BCCI . Mr Atray, a former cricketer, was sent by the Administration in the BCCI meeting in Kolkatta about six weeks ago where it was decided that facilities in Chandigarh are on the priority list of development.
