PAU experts caution farmers on insect attack
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, August 23
Dr Bant Singh Kooner and Dr R.S. Mann, senior entomologists of the pulses section of PAU, have cautioned farmers against the attack of hairy caterpillar and semi-looper in moong and mash crops during monsoon season.

According to Dr Kooner, Caterpillars eat the green part of leaves, leaving behind only the midrib. At times, the crop may be totally denuded due to a severe attack by caterpillars. He said the young larvae could be destroyed by pulling out the infested plants and burying these. In case for grown up caterpillars or when the population was high, 500 milk of Thiodan 35 EC (endusulfan) or Ekalux 25 EC (quinalphos) or 200 ml of Nuvan 10 (dichlorvos) in 80-100 litres of water per acre could be sprayed with the help of manually operated sprayer.

He said, “Larvae of semi-looper also feed extensively on leaves of moong and mash and can totally defoliate the plants in severe cases. It can be controlled by spraying 50 ml of thiodan 35 EC (endosulfan) or 200 ml of Nuvan 100 (dichlorvos) in 80-100 litres of water per acre.”

Similarly, the Department of Horticulture has intimated that due to wet and rainy climate, the grape crop gets severely infected with antracnose and cerocospora leaf spots. The orchardists should watch out for dark brown spots on leaves which enlarge and may even cause premature defoliation. Dark brown sunken spots can also appear on tender twigs leading to die-back of these twigs, resulting in reduction of fruit yield. The diseases can be controlled by alternate sprays of Bordeaux moixture (2:2:250) or Bavistin 50 WP, 400g/400 liters of water per acre.

Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, August 23
A fast track court has sentenced Soni, alias Sonu, Kuki, Dinesh, alias Dara, and Vicky, all residents of Chowni Mohalla, to seven years rigorous imprisonment each in an attempt to murder case. The court has also imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 each on the accused.

Delivering the verdict, the Additional Sessions Judge, Mr Sunil Kumar Arora, held: “It is proved on record by the prosecution by leading consent, convincing and unblemished evidence that the accused in pursuance of their common object with Babu, who has since died, formed an unlawful assembly on June 15, 2000 at around 9 pm in the area of Chhowni Mohalla. They were armed with deadly weapons and further caused injuries to Ajit Singh with such an intention and knowledge that if by that act they had caused the death of Ajit Singh, they would have been guilty of murder.”

The accused were booked under Sections 148, 307, 323, 324 and 149 of the IPC at Division No. 4 police station on the complaint of an eyewitness, Paramjit Singh, as the injured, Ajit Singh, was not in a position to make the statement, as per prosecution. During the trial, one of the accused, Babu, was murdered.

The motive for the occurrence, as per prosecution, was that the accused who belonged to Balmiki Community had suspicion that the injured was extending help to Satish Kumar in a dispute, which had earlier took place between him and the Balmiki Community.

According to the prosecution, on June 15, 2001 Ajit Singh had gone to a shop, Pappu Karyana Store, in Chhowni Mohalla to collect the payment of wheat. In the meantime, the accused armed with swords, baseball bats, dagger etc. reached the market and attacked Ajit Singh before fleeing the spot.

Interestingly, the complainant was declared hostile, as he refused to identify the accused persons with the plea that he had seen them from behind at the time of the attack. However, he had supported the prosecution during examination in chief.
