27 probables for city cricket team

The Ludhiana District Cricket Association (LDCA) conducted trials at the Arya College for Boys ground here today in which more than 40 players participated. A panel, consisting of five selectors, Mr Chaman Lal Malhotra, Mr Lokesh Khanna, Mr Pawan Pandey, besides two senior players, Ankur Kakkar and Gagandeep Singh shortlisted 27 probables for the training-cum, coaching camp prior to their participation in the forthcoming Punjab State Inter-District Cricket Tournament for the Katoch Shield being organised at different venues in the state by the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA). The fixtures of this tournament slated to commence in the second week of September are yet to be announced by the PCA. According to Mr Vinod Chitkara, honorary general secretary, LDCA, these probables have been asked to report to coaches, Mr Dharam Pal and Mr Manmohan Bedi, at Arya College ground on August 19 at 3.30 pm. The names of the probables are: Ankur Kakkar, Gagandeep Singh, Karan Goel, Varun Gupta, Tarun Kanish, Gaurav Marwaha, Amrit Pal Singh, Vishal Pathania, Luv Abhlish, Harjit Singh Panesar, Ashish Vinayak, Jasjeet Singh, Rajat Bhatia, Deepak Kapoor, Jasmeet Singh, Gaurav Khurana, Sukhmeet Singh, Harpreet Singh, Jeevan Sood, Ashish Sehgal, Amandeep, Jasdeep Singh, Priyavrat, Gaurav Chopra, Kunal Kapoor, Avtar Singh and Amit Kumar.
A participant at the trials to select the Punjab teams for the forthcoming National Aquatics Championship, which will be held in Kolkata next month, in Ludhiana on Sunday.

Swimming trials:
More than 100 swimmers, including 22 girls, turned up for the trials conducted by the Punjab Swimming Association at Punjab Agricultural University swimming pool here on Sunday. The trials were organised to pick up the swimming (men and women) and waterpolo (men) teams for the National Aquatic Championship to be held from September 17 to 22 at Kolkata.According to Mr Balraj Sharma, honorary general secretary, Punjab Swimming Association, besides other events, Punjab has qualified for the 4x100m freestyle, 4x200m freestyle and 4x100m medley. Eighteen (men) swimmers were selected for the waterpolo team. Besides, seven Punjab junior waterpolo players who took part in the last edition of the Junior National Waterpolo Championship were also advised to attend the preparatory camp slated to be held from September 1 to 13 at Sports School, Jalandhar, Mr Sharma said. BCM Zone and PAU Zone won their respective semifinals matches and advanced in the final of the PAU Inter-Zonal Cricket (u-19) Tournament being played at Government Model Senior Secondary School ground at Punjab Agricultural University here today. In the first semifinal between BCM Zone and Sahnewal Zone, former, batting first, were all out for 115 runs in 16 overs and then restricted their opponents to 92 runs after 15.3 overs. Brief scores: BCM Zone 115 all out (Daman 35, Gaurav 20, Rohit 24; Simarjeet 3 for 21, Hardeep 1 for 23, Sanjay 1 for 32 and Amarjeet 2 for 27); Sahnewal Zone 92 all out ( Sanjay 28, Ramanjeet 28 and Jagarpreet 4 for 15). Karate meetVishal Sharma of Chandigarh was adjudged best karateka in the second SMBBS All-India Invitation Shotokan Karate Tournament held at the auditorium of the Government Institute for Blind, Jamalpur, here on Sunday. Nearly 150 karatekas from all over the country participated. Thirty participants (boys and girls) in the senior category were honoured. Mr Sukhdev Singh, general secretary, Shotokan Karate International Federation, Punjab, said the winners of this tournament would be felicitated on the eve of the International GICNIN Funakoshi Invitation Shotokan Championship, scheduled to be held in the UK in October.
