Century steel outplays Panchkula club

Century Steel Industries outplayed the Panchkula Cricket Club by six wickets, thanks to superb performance by Jai Kapil who scored unbeaten 37 runs and claimed two wickets for nine runs in the Satluj Cup League Cricket Tournament played here at Satluj Public School, Sector 4, Panchkula.

Batting first, Umesh Kaira of PCC XI scored 72 runs off 51 deliveries which included four sixers and seven to the fence. PCC XI made 145 runs for the loss of nine wickets in 25 overs.

In reply, Century Steel Industries were able to achieve the target with still six wickets in hand.

Brief scores; PCC XI: 145 runs for nine in 25 overs (Umesh Kaira 72, RajKumar 28, Dhirender Gusain 26, Ashutosh Walia 3 for 21, Ajay Bhardwaj 3 for 23, Jai Kapil 2 for nine); Century Steel Industries:147 runs for four in 24.1 overs (Manav Asopa 56, Jai Kapil 37 n.o., Vaneet Chawla 34, Ankush Mittal 21 n.o., Pankaj Sharma 2 for 27, Ranjit Rana 2 for 28).

Pitch and Putt

Rahul Bakshi shot 2 under at the monthly Pitch and Putt competition organised by the Chandigarh Golf Association by winning the open category event at the CGA Golf Range here today. Earlier, he had set a course record of 3 under in the June Pitch and Putt meet. In all, 38 participants took part in three categories — open, juniors (below-15) and girls.

Mr J.S. Grewal, Director, Hero Honda CGA Golf Academy, gave away the prizes.

Results: Open — Rahul Bakshi 1, (20 points); Dilsher Sukhija 2. (15 points); juniors — Abhijit Chaha1 1, (17 points), Raghav Bhandari 2. (14 points); girls — Sruthi Reddy 1 (11 points) and Mani Chander 2 (11 points).

Cricket meet

Chandigarh Engineering Department XI got the better of PGI XI by 17 runs in one of the league matches played for the United India Insurance Cup in the Inter Institutional Cricket Tournament played here today at the PEC cricket grounds. The winners got two points. In another match, Nestle XI beat the Food Corporation of India XI by a narrow margin of four runs. In yet another match played today, Kaushar XI defeated Education XI by one wicket in a closely contested tie.

Brief scores: 1st match: Chandigarh Engineering Department XI — 80 runs for eight in 20 overs (Satish 25, Kunwar Singh 19, Manoj Puri 18, Chandan 2 for eight, Inder Pal 2 for 18); PGI XI: 63 runs all out in 17.4 overs (Fateh Singh 19, Parmod 16, Rupesh 4 for 11, Gurinder 3 for 16, Manoj Puri 2 for two).

IInd match :Education XI — 112 runs for eight in 20 overs (Harry 56 n.o., Sumandeep 20, Rajesh 18, Rajinder 2 for 20, Sanjeev 3 for 18); Kaushar XI: 115 runs for nine in 19.5 overs (Ravinder 42, Rajinder 18, Sanjeev 4 for 23, Rajpal 3 for 18).

IIIrd match: Nestle XI — 95 runs all out in 19.2 overs (Rakesh Purang 58,Yogesh 19, Kulwinder Romi 5 for 22, Kamal Thakur 2 for 23); FCI XI — 91 runs for nine in 20 overs (Gurdeep Rai 29, Kulwinder Romi 28, Arun Sharma 18, Rajeev Kumar 3 for 20, Arpinder bedi 2 for 16).
