Govt yet to check sale of synthetic milk Jammu, August 8 It is learnt that synthetic milk made from urea and other harmful ingredients is finding way in large quantity into the households, particularly in the Jammu city, Kathua and parts of Udhampur. However, neither the Department of Consumer Affairs nor the Jammu Municipal Corporation has taken steps to prevent the sale of synthetic milk or take action against its manufacturers. The departments responsible for checking spurious commodities in the state have the advantage of scientific and accurate testing in the Regional Research Laboratory (RRL) of the CSIR situated here. The RRL in the past has exposed rackets of sub-standard drugs and adulteration of essential commodities. Observers point out that the lifestyle of many milk vendors here has tremendously changed in the recent past and a large number of them drive to the towns in their own cars and jeeps to deliver milk in houses. Meanwhile, Mr P.S. Betab, Director of the Consumers Affairs and Public Distribution Department, today said that a special squad of the department had lifted samples of 21 brands of popular cold drinks and mineral water. These have been sent to the RRL for examination. He said that presence of pesticides and other pollutants will be ascertained in these products. |
