CM leaves midway, delegates follow suit

The state-level Panchayati Raj convention organised jointly by the rural and urban units of the District Congress Committee here today proved to be a chaotic affair. The chairman of the political training department of the Congress, Mr Mani Shankar Aiyar, who delivered the keynote address, described it as the “worst convention on Panchayati Raj” he had ever attended.

Doctors to intensify agitation from tomorrow

Reacting to the refusal of the Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, to resume the non-practising allowance (NPA), the Punjab Civil Medical Services (PCMS) Association has decided to step up its agitation to get it back.

Cane growers await payment of dues
Doraha, August 3
Nearly 500 farmers of over 100 surrounding villages are being sheer exploitated by the government and the management of a sugarmill, which has not paid their dues. The victims have been moving from pillar to post for the past four months for the redressal of their grievances but to no avail.

Hosiery unit gutted
Ludhiana, August 3
Property worth lakhs was gutted in a major fire that broke out in a hosiery factory at Madhopuri this afternoon. Though no loss of life was reported, a huge quantity of yarn and other goods were destroyed.

Roadside stalls removed
Ludhiana, August 3
Roadside stalls selling juice and other eatables in Guru Tegh Bahadur market have been removed. Attempts had been made by the former MC Commissioner, Mr R.L. Kalsia, to restore order in the market. However, after his departure things were back to square one. The encroachers even put chairs and tables along the road, leaving no space for pedestrians.

Mr Karandeep Singh Kairon has been appointed organising secretary of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. An appointment letter to this effect was received by Mr Kairon here yesterday.

The Sarabha Nagar police has registered a case in the robbery-cum-abduction case involving a 30-year-old-woman of BRS Nagar here, who was allegedly pushed into a car by two youths on Friday evening.

The Jodhewal police yesterday registered a case under Sections 307, 353, 186, 332, 224, 323 and 34 of the IPC on the statement of Mr Balvir Singh, ASI, Jodhewal police station, against Ashok Kumar and his son Sunil Kumar, residents of New Shakti Nagar.

CM ‘indifferent’ to plight of trade, industry

The President of the Punjab Beopar Mandal Mr Tulsidas Jaitwani has expressed unhappiness over the indifferent attitude of the Punjab Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, towards the plight of the trade and industry in the state. Mr Jaitwani said here yesterday that traders and industrialists were frustrated because of the unsympathetic attitude of the Chief Minister.

Plea to let SC, ST students retry for admissions

The SC/ST and BC Employees Front has urged the Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, to direct the Education Department and Punjab Technical University to allow students in the reserved category to seek admission to colleges, now that the massive fee hike has been rolled back.

DEO on inspection spree
Amloh, August 3
As teachers in government schools are better qualified than their counterparts in private schools, they should provide better education to the students. The teachers should be punctual in their duties, as they are role model for students, said Mr Dev Singh, District Education Officer (DEO Elementary), Fatehgarh Sahib, while addressing a meeting at the local Elementary School here yesterday. The meeting was attended by 184 teachers of Amloh block.

The Primary/Elementary Shiksha Bachao Front has decided to file a writ petition in the high court against the new education policy of the government under which primary, middle, high and secondary schools had been clubbed into two sections instead of the earlier four sections.

Doctors reject offer on chamber practice
Ludhiana, August 3
The faculty members of the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital have rejected the proposal of the management to introduce chamber practice and ban private practice at home. The members met yesterday to discuss the proposal of the management and decided that status quo should be maintained.

Ramgarhia Guru Nanak Club pipped R S Model School 16-4 to bag the girls title in the 7th Ludhiana District Junior Softball Championship for boys and girls which concluded at the Ramgarhia Girls College ground, Miller Ganj, here today.

School cricket meet from today
Ludhiana, August 3
Sacred Heart Convent Senior Secondary School, Sarabha Nagar, Ludhiana, will play host to the Inter-School (Gill Zone) Cricket Tournament slated to be held from August 4 to 11. According to the itinerary issued by Mr O.S. Nagi, head, Sports Department of the host school, two matches will be played daily during this week-long tournament.
