Global Oral Rehydration Day today
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 28
Even as diarrhoea continues to be one of the major cause of death among children in India, the Health authorities, on the occasion of Global Oral Rehydration Day tomorrow, have stressed the need for proper management of the infection, which could considerably reduce the mortality rate.

“Most of the deaths resulting due to diarrhoea can easily be prevented with the help of oral rehydration solution or even simple homemade solutions,” explained Dr M.P. Minocha, Director Family Welfare.

He said majority of diarrhoea deaths were taking place in the underdeveloped world and in India alone around 8 lakh children died each year of it.

He said dehydration and resultant malnutrition were the main cause of fatality in most diarrhoea cases.

“Unnecessary medications, including anti-biotics should be avoided during diarrhoeal episodes, as these are non-bacterial in original and are self-limiting,” he added.

Besides, it was important to continue feeding the child from time to time, even in times of continuous vomiting and diarrhoea. “It is frequently seen that people stop feeding the child, thinking that this will stop diarrhoea, but end up causing more harm,” he said.

Doctors recommend that breast feeding the infant was beneficial, as not only did it keep up intake of fluid but also provided immunity against a number of infections. Feeding the child with juice, lassi, dal water and lime water were also beneficial.

In most of the cases anti-diarrhoeal drugs and anti-biotics do not help and can aggravate the situation. The oral rehydration solutions are easily available and can be obtained from dispensaries and civil hospitals.

Immediate medical help should be sought in case child becomes listless, has a dry mouth and stops passing sufficient urine.
