LITERACY CONTEST: The District Language Officer (DLO) informed that the district-level literary and cultural quiz competitions would be held on August 29 at 10 a.m. in his office. He said the competitions would be held in three categories. In Category A, the students up to Class VIII, Category B up to Class XII and in category C, up to BA/BSc can participate. Applications, on the prescribed proforma could be submitted till August 14, which is available with DLO office.

ARRESTED: The Hariana police has arrested a travel agent, Sadhu Singh, son of Hukam Singh of Razma Pandori village under Section 406, 420 of the IPC for cheating Satnam Singh of Kang Mai on the pretext of sending him to Tanzania. CRUSHED: A bus of a private transport company crushed cyclist Jarnail Singh of Bagwain near Garhshanker on Thursday. The Garhshanker police has registered a case under Section 304A of the PC against Amrik Singh, driver of the bus. PHOTO I-CARDS: A special campaign for preparing photo identity cards of those who were not having these will be launched from July 19 to 23. Photo identity cards will only be prepared of those voters whose names were existing in the voter lists but who had not got the cards.

YOGA CAMP: The Bharatiya Yog Sansthan, Dugri, is organising a free yoga camp at Main Tanki Wala Park, behind Main Market, Model Town, on Sunday. The camp will begin from 5.15 am to 7.15 pm. PROGRAMME: The Punjabi Sahitya Akademi, Ludhiana, will organise ‘meet the author’ programme on July 20 at Punjabi Bhavan. Sahitya Academi award winner Niranjan Tasneem will share his experiences in the field of Punjabi literature during the last five decades with the audience. In this ‘ru-baru’, the readers will elicit answers from the author to their queries. The function will be presided over Surjit Pattar and Ravinder Bhattal will compere the proceedings. WORKSHOP: A three-day workshop on bridal make-up and haircut organised by Sweet Smyle Beauty Clinic, concluded here on Friday. Ms Geeta Jaggi, one of the organisers, said the workshop conducted by Mr Kishor Thakkar was attended by more than 30 beauticians from the city. Fundamental tips on make-up, hairstyle, aging make-up, dark skin make-up, bridal mehandi tattoos with latest and advanced concept, haircut, perming, hair-colouring and loose hairstyles for parties were given by the expert from Mumbai. SCHOLARSHIPS: JD Institute of Fashion Technology Ludhiana, conducted an open scholarship test pertaining to fashion design, knitwear design and technology, jewellery design and interior design courses for which first scholarship was won by Ms Jyoti Jain for interior design and second scholarship was won by Ms Naveen for fashion design and third was won by Ms Shallu for interior design. These students were selected on merit basis and the test was based on general awareness and mental ability. There was a practical test also to judge the creativity of the candidates in which students made different things like lamp, fan, tree, flowers, glares, dolls, jewellery pieces etc with the help of wires and old newspapers provided to them. The institute would hold another such test on July 27.
PHAGWARA
DILAPIDATED ROAD: Residents of about one dozen villages, including Thakarki, Bhancki, Nihalgarh, Jagatpur Jattan, Rurki, Badapind and Rurka, are facing lots of problems due to the dilapidated condition of Bhagatpura-Kotrani road linking these villages to Phagwara town. Shopkeepers alleged on Tuesday that their business had suffered due to the pitiable condition of the road.
