Unsafe building owners get ultimatum
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, July 18
The Municipal Corporation, Ludhiana (MCL) has asked the owners of unsafe buildings in the city to demolish these themselves or face action. To prevent any mishap due to the collapse of buildings in the rainy season, the MCL has asked the occupants of unsafe buildings in the city to vacate them immediately or demolish them. Otherwise, the authorities would be forced to act tough against the violators.

In a communique to the press today, the Superintending Engineer of the MC said it had come to the notice of the corporation that in the core areas of the city, a large number of buildings built with nanakshahi bricks and with mud-mortar were in a dilapidated condition and required either immediate repair or demolition.

He maintained that such buildings had already outlived their lives because periodical repairs and renovations had not been carried out. He further stated that some unsafe buildings in the narrow lanes of the city posed a threat to the lives and properties of occupants and their neighbours.

In the interest of the public and to save precious lives, the MC has appealed to the residents of such buildings to vacate these unsafe buildings and demolish the same at their own failing which Municipal Corporation would initiate proceedings under Section 273 of the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act, 1976 and the costs so incurred to demolish them would be recovered from the owners of the buildings.
