Wrestlers arrive in the Capital to noisy welcome
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, July 15
The Indian wrestling squad, which participated in the Commonwealth Wrestling Championship in Canada, returned to Delhi to a noisy welcome when they arrived at the Indira Gandhi International Airport on Monday night.

Palwinder Singh Cheema, who won a gold medal and Kripa Shankar, another gold medallist, were the focus of attention as an unruly crowd received them with the deafening sound of drumbeats.

The drum-beaters just would not leave the wrestlers in peace till they forked out “bakshish” from their wallets. The media persons were denied access to the wrestlers when they arrived at the departure lounge of the airport. The 28-member Indian contingent for the Commonwealth Championship made a huge haul of eight golds, nine silver and one bronze medal.

India also annexed the overall championship title in the men’s free style event. But some of the medal winners disclosed that the competitions were not very tough and most of the weights had only three or four competitors..

As a result, one victory was enough for the Indian wrestlers to ensure a medal. Yet, it was indeed a commendable performance by the grapplers, who called on Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Vikram Verma in New Delhi on Tuesday morning.
